the new characters i like they took in lily and roseline and treated them very good. i think they should be very greatful. i compare them to the revren because he was very nice to lily taking her back to town. My favorite is june because she always happy. she treats them nice and always good. my least favorite is april because she killed herself
ReplyDeleteWhen the Calender Sisters first entered the scene, I didn't know what to expect. Were they going to be friendly or hostile, strange or normal? They seemed very likeable, very quirky, and that was just when Lily described their house. As I kept on reading, I thought, Wow.I want them to be my Grandmas! August is the oldest, the wisest, and the most emphatic. June is hot-tempered, complex, and prickly. May is sweet and meek and hopelessly gentle and sad. May is very, very similar to ANOTHER May in a different book called The Last Olynpian. They both have the same name, they are both "not all there", and both are desperately sad and hopelesssly helpless. I felt really sorry for both of them, because both characters had suffered a tradgedy that they could not get passed. Anyway, all in all, I would have to say that June is my favorite sister character-wise (she's got a lot of layers, and despite all of her flaws has a lot of heart too(plus, she's a music lover, like me))and August is my favorite sister person-wise (I love how she relates bee-keeping to real life, and her compasssion coud fill canyons). But...I hve a big soft spot for May too. I just love the way she saves all of the roaches in the house, how she is so fragile yet so sweet and vulnerable and innocent. I love the Calender sisters.
ReplyDeleteThe new characters in the book are really well described. Sue Monk Kidd describes them by using candy and food descriptions. This will tell us more about August, June, and May Boatwright. I like the new characters because they will give us more information on Lily's mother and why she came to Tiburon.
ReplyDeleteLet’s just start out by saying no matter how these calendar sisters act or what their personality is like they didn’t have to open their home to complete strangers Lily and Rosaleen so right away I feel these sisters come from a good family and have a good heart. However I have noticed certain things about each of these sisters. As a whole it’s easy to see these sisters are different. Besides being named after months, they celebrate an unofficial religion, and make their living off honey. Like Rosaleen these are three very cultural women who aren’t afraid of showing the world they are black even during the civil rights act. June seems a little sour but I definitely think there is a reason behind the way she acts, maybe it’s a past experience or something going on in her life right now. There is obviously something wrong with May she is super sensitive and is very set in her ways. (Eats a banana every morning, and always hums Oh! Susanna. August seems like the head of the sisters and seems to have her head screwed on the straightest; however I wonder if she knows Lily’s mom. I think these sisters remind me a lot of the witch sister from the movie Hocus Pocus, with a sort of weird sister (May), a smart but serious sister (June) and the leader of the sisters (August). Out of the sisters I think August is my favorite because she is basically the one that is providing shelter for Lily and Rosaleen because May can’t and June won’t. June is my least favorite because of how negative she always is.

ReplyDeleteI think these characters are going to be very helpful to lily because they might know her mom. August is a very nice girl sweet and helpful. She was like the mother lily always wanted. June is mean and self-conscious. She hates lily because she’s white. May is very emotional and cries a lot.
May is like Lennie in mice and men because he is emotional and so is may. They both also need someone help them along or else they would go crazy alone. My favorite is august because she is very helpful to lily and cares about her. My least favorite is June because she is racist and hates lily.

• What do you think of the new characters? What are they like?
• Can you compare any of them to characters in other books? Which character is your favorite? Least favorite?
When Lily and Rosaleen were standing besides the “Caribbean Pink” house that look like Pepto-Bismal—I didn’t know what to expect. I had no clue whether the people living there would rude and angry and turn Lily and Rosaleen away. There was no way I could’ve figured out whether they would be crazy and nice or cruel and unkind. Over all, I like May and August because of how warm and friendly they are. August immediately agrees to take them in knowing no one else would take both of them. May is sweet and kind and couldn’t hurt a fly. In fact she makes trails of marshmallows just to save a cockroach’s life. May is crazy, but sweet and kind. June is the oddest because of how complex she is and how many different layers she has. At first, June is hostile towards Lily, but eventually something changes when Lily hoses her and the tension passes. May is kind of crazy, sweet, and childlike. Meanwhile, August is straighter forward, but just as kind and giving. June is so different in the multiple layers of her personality.
I would compare August and May to Thea from a novel called Night World. For one, both girls despite one being a witch and the other two are human, are sensible and reasonable. Thea loves to care for others, including animals, which is similar how August was ready to care for Lily. Meanwhile, May shares Thea’s love of animals and other creatures as she goes to extremes to save a bugs life and cries over the death of a stranger. Thea is sweet and innocent just like May, but also is sensible, reasonable, and thinks things through like August does. August is in charge and has her own business makign honey. I think that if I blended August’s and May’s personalities I would get something like Thea’s personality. I like all of the calendar sisters and each of them is so different like a different like different colors of the spectrum. Yet somehow their personalities fit well together. My favorite person would be August because she seems to be able to keep everything together and is very kind towards Lily and Rosaleen. Meanwhile, my favorite personality would be May’s because she cares about everyone and everything and is so open and happy. Meanwhile June is the most interesting person, but my least favorite person, in general. June’s personality had a lot of depth and is very easy to believe. June seems to be aggressive and closed up making her my least favorite person and personality wise. In the end, I think each of the Calendar Sisters different personality and mind frames match perfectly together. There’s something special about May, who’s so sweet and kind, August, the reasonable and caring one, and June, who is so complex and always seems to be changing her mind about certain things.
The new characters, August, May, and June Boatwright, are friendly in letting Lily and Rosaleen stay at their house while Lily figures things out. August is wise, and an intelligent women who seems to know a lot. June acts more against the idea of letting Rosaleen and Lily room in the honey house. May cries often and hums “Oh Suzanna.” She does this because of the death of her twin sister, April. May never got over her death and whenever something sad happens she cant contain herself. My favorite out of the new characters is August. The reason I favor August out of the three sisters, is because she is wise and she seems to not be discriminative against the color Lily’s skin. She lets them stay without much questions, she figures she will find out more later on. June is my least favorite, because she was not happy about the idea of letting them stay in their home. I feel I would be the same way, but at least be friendlier to them about it.
ReplyDeleteI think the Boatwright's are a very nice and giving family. Lily and Rosaleen are very grateful that the Boatwright's took them into their house and let them stay until they found a place of their own. The girls are very nice to Lily and Rosaleen and they can relate sort of relate to Rosaleen. (due to color)
ReplyDeleteI would compare them to the Alice Leanne and Mary because in a book that i read, they were three sisters who took a runaway in. They cared for her just as the Boatwright's did towards Lily and Rosaleen.
My favorite character so far is Lily because she is a strong open hearted girl. She is strong because of how much abuse she went through, and i idolize her for that. My least favorite character is April because she killed herself. She proved that she cannot handle hard times, and that she just chooses to end her life instead of fighting for what she believes in.
I really like the addition of the new characters because with each new character there is more possibility for characters to have relationships with each other. There is also more possibility for certain plot holes from earlier in the book to be filled in. also the addition of Zack as a love interest for Lily is a very interesting choice considering the kind of person she is compared to him. Not to mention the crossing of racial barriers that existed in those times makes there relationship even more awkward. Even Lily said that she thought that a white girl liking a black man would be impossible. Also the book kind of, to me at least makes it seem as though Zack is older than he actually is by a few years which makes their relationship seem mildly pedophilic. The way that Zack smiles whenever he and Lily do anything “Spicy” is also very strange because it happens, Lily thinks about it in an analytical way, and they just move on to another subject matter. An example of which is them going from Lily sucking the purple honey off of Zack’s finger to talking about Willifred Marchant. August is my favorite character because she is so kind to everyone. My least favorite character is Franklin Posey because he is such a horrible person.
ReplyDeleteThe new characters are not what I expected. I didn’t expect that the names of the sisters would be after the mouths of the summer. Also, I didn’t expect that they would be so friendly and welcoming. The caption, I think, is August. She seems like the one who always takes charge in a sticky situation. June is the stubborn one. She will never say yes to Neil, but he will never give up. I can compare May to Lennie because they both are slow and they both don’t have a clue. My favorite character is August because she always takes charge. And my least favorite character is T-ray because he hates Lily.
ReplyDeleteThe Boatwright Sisters all have different and unique characteristics that define each one of them. June is the first one that Lily and Rosaleen meet when approaching the house, and she has a sort of bitter personality towards them, especially Lily since she’s white. --- “Are you August Boatwright?” “No, I’m June Boatwright, she said, her eyes sweeping over the stitches on Rosaleen’s forehead. “August Boatwright is my sister. You came to see her?” … I wished June with her whip would grin, too, but she only looked annoyed. “Is August expecting you?” she said, directing her words to Rosaleen. --- This encounter makes me not appreciate June as much as the other Calendar Sisters. The other two sisters were very pleasant to both Rosaleen and Lily right from the start, and they ignored the fact that she was white. I understand that it was because of white people discriminating June’s twin sister April, that April committed suicide at 15, but she didn’t even give Lily a chance. She has a bitter personality towards Lily the whole book so far, and wants her to leave, which causes August to be furious at her sister. June is my least favorite of the Boatwright’s, and unless she tries to accept Lily and give her a chance, she will remain my least favorite. --- “I’m May Boatwright,” she said. “I’m August’s sister too.” She smiled at us, one of those odd grins that let you know she was not an altogether normal person. --- That pretty much sums up May, not an altogether normal person. However, that un-normal characteristic that May has defines her. From peeling about five bananas each morning until she finds one with no bruises to bawling every time she hears or sees something bad happening and has to then go to her wailing wall to not killing any bugs or mice because she doesn’t want to see them suffering to being an amazing cook, that’s May. She is a very outgoing woman, which makes me enjoy reading about her. Every chapter she does a new stupid or silly thing that adds humor to the whole book. --- “Well, you can stay here till you figure out what to do. We can’t have you living on the side of the road,” said August. --- August has the personality of a nurturing mother, caring for everyone and everything, like how May cares for animals. She’s very sweet to Lily and Rosaleen, and doesn’t care that Lily is white. She shows them where they can stay right away, and makes sure they are satisfied all the time. Even though she knows that Lily is lying about her past, she still takes her in and tries to provide her with a family that she can trust. She sits down with Lily and has heart to heart conversations with her frequently, and lets Lily help her work in the fields. She doesn’t listen to June, who tries to convince August that Lily is no good and she doesn’t deserve to stay at the Boatwright’s with them. August just does what she believes is best for her and that is keeping Lily at their home with the sisters. She tries to include Lily in everything, like the Daughters of Mary mass they had at their house on Sunday morning. August is by far my favorite one of the Calendar Sisters. The Boatwright sisters remind me of the men at the ranch in Of Mice and Men. Some of them accepted Lennie and George when they arrived at the ranch, like August and May, but some of them did not like them there and wanted them to leave, thinking they didn’t belong there. Those people were like June in this story. I can’t wait to see how their personalities develop more as the story continues, and maybe some of them will change their minds about other people.
ReplyDeleteI like the new characters. They seem to be a very nice group of people so far in the book. It was very generous of them to let random strangers stay at their house. August seems like a very good motherly figure, she seems to have raised her daughters well. Junes boyfriend, Neil, seems also very nice. I would stay at their house too.
ReplyDeleteWhen the calendar sisters first came into the novel, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from them. Them seemed very nice, except for June. June always had a bad sense of Rosaleen and Lily when they first came. June thought that they were lying about something the second they got there. I think that August will be very good to both Rosaleen and Lily. I have a feeling that she knows something that we don’t, and she can really help them out. She seems very motherly and knows what to do in a time of need. For example, when Rosaleen first came to the house August went out of her way to buy her new clothing. May also seems very nice. Even though she has a crying problem, and is a little sensitive she will help the girls. May cooks for all of them, and makes special things for Lily like the banana salad, and the “L” shaped pancake. I can tell that she truly cares about Lily and Rosaleen. On the other hand, June is the most stubborn of all. She is the only one that doesn’t want to help them out. When they first came, she said that she didn’t want them their to August right in front of them. This gave Lily a bad vive, and even Lily knows that June doesn’t want them there. I think that August relates to the grandma in the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”. In this book the grandma takes her friend in her home, even though she really doesn’t know her. This is exactly what August is doing, by taking in Lily and Rosaleen. They are both very kind people, and I know that they could help the family. Therefore, theses two people relate very well. In this book, my favorite character would have to be May. May seems to try very hard to stay with the family, and be a good part of it. She wants to help Lily out through her hard times. That is something that is priceless to me she is helping even though she has a problem since her twin died. On the other hand, my least favorite character would have to be June. June is the only mean one in the family. She is in her own little world and doesn’t want to be a part of anyone else’s. She is stubborn and obnoxious, therefore I don’t like her as much as I do as the other sister.

ReplyDelete• What do you think of the new characters? What are they like?
Can you compare any of them to characters in other books? Which character is your favorite? Least favorite?
I think the new Calender sisters are nice and very caring to take in to people they don’t know. The sisters are all different in many ways. June is the mean one that cares more about herself than others. She has a boyfriend named Neil but she doesn’t want to marry him. May is jus like Lilly because they are both Naïve. August is the queen bee because she is like the ruler of the plantation. My favorite one is August because we are both the ruler of our world. She rules over her family and I rule over my family. My least favorite is June because she’s uncaring and I’m very caring. That is my opinion of the calender sister.
The three new characters, August, May, and June, are a great addition to the story. They are each very different from each other, but yet still manage to maintain a great relationship with one another. August is very intelligent, down to earth, caring, and loving. She welcomes Lily into her home with arms wide open. She treats Lily and Rosaleen like family, and does not rush them into telling them their life story. May is very unstable, and often needs help from her sisters. She lost someone very close to her when she was younger, and has not been the same emotionally since. June is a very stubborn person. She does not agree with August in letting Lily and Rosaleen stay in their home without them knowing what is really happening with them. June does not feel safe or comfortable not knowing anything about someone who is living in her home.
ReplyDeleteAugust reminds me of what I imagine Lily’s mom may have been like. They both seem to have a gentle, caring way to which they interact with people like Lily. August seems to understand Lily well, and so did Lily’s mother. Lily’s mother seemed to have cared for Lily to no end. May seemed to be the opposite of her twin sister. Her sister was very strong headed and a take charge kind of person. May was very laid back and kept off to the side. August is my favorite character because she is so kind to everyone. She is also very intelligent, and knows all the right things to do. My least favorite character is June. This is because she is not open to new things like Lily and Rosaleen staying with them for some time. Overall, I think the three of them create a good balance of emotions.
I think that so far the calendar sisters are amazing role models for Lily. They are free and independent woman that lily could really learn from about being happy. August is the leader and very strong willed. Also, she takes care of everyone else in the house like she takes care of the bees. June is the stricter one of the three and keeps them grounded and a little bit serious. May is the youngest of the sisters and is a little troubled because of her past. They all keep each other happy though and they love each other very much. I don’t think that they relate to any other characters in any other book because they are all so special and individual. You could say that they “beat to their own drum” because they don’t follow anyone else or care what they say. My favorite character is probably August because she is a leader and is extremely wise. She knows always what to do and what to say and gets a lot of respect from everyone else. I don’t think that I have a least favorite character because all of them seem like extremely wonderful woman, but have some faults of their own, even August.
ReplyDeleteI think that that Boatwright sisters’ are extremely nice since they let Rosaleen and Lily stay in their house when they know she is lying to them and also that they are strangers to them. Also the calendar Lily stay into their house even when they knew that Lily was white and that they were black. In the time that this took place in, the sisters’ don’t care about the color of others skin, I know this because they let complete strangers stay with they that don’t have the same color as them. June doesn’t like Lily that much because she is white and is lying to them. She doesn’t really like Lily because also Lily knows they think she is lying to them but she does want to tell them the truth. August is more like a mother figure to Lily but Rosaleen doesn’t really like that because ever since Lily’s mom was killed Rosaleen was the center of her world and now since they went to the calendar sisters’ house August has been the center of her world or her mother figure. I feel bad for the sister’s because one of their sisters, April killed herself because she was done with black people getting blamed for things that white people did.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite sister out off all of them has to be August. August is my favorite because she is like Lily’s mother. Also she knows that Lily lied to her and she still lets her stay with them. August teaches Lily how to work in the bee hives and how to collect the honey to sell.
My least favorite calendar sister has to be June. June is my least favorite because she hates Lily for being white and for lying. She isn’t very nice to Lily and wants Lily to leave their house. When August heard June and Lily talking about leaving their house she got upset and told Lily that she was too leave when she was ready.
Answer: 1. The three new characters in the book are very interesting people. May, June and August Boatwright are three sisters who have a bee plantation to make and sell honey. In general I think all three sisters are very nice (except June who can be mean to Lily), have gentle souls and they all seem to enjoy their life. August is obviously the older sister, since she seems to run the house. Not only that but she is nice and loving since she let Lily and Rosaleen stay at her house. May is kind of a nice happy girl, but most of the time she is very depressed and cry’s a lot (she is like this because of the death of her twin sister when she was young). Also May sometimes needs something to be absolutely the way she likes it. For example she will peal tons of bananas until she finds one that doesn’t have one bruise on it because that is the only way she will eat it. June Boatwright likes to keep to herself, isn’t all that nice but is very kind to certain people. Like how June is nice to her sisters and her boyfriend (well before they broke up) but really shows no kindness to Lily. That is what I think of the Boatwright sisters.
ReplyDelete2. August Boatwright is pretty similar to Tom Sawyer’s aunt in the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Tom Sawyer’s aunt is a very nice loving person who takes good care of Tom and runs her house well. Well, that description also fits August perfectly too, only August takes care of Lily. My favorite character is defiantly August Boatwright for a few reasons. August is very nice and tells good stories in the book, which are fun to read. Not only that but she is also smart and kind of talks to Lily in ways that sound like she knows everything about Lily being on the run. So with August witty and kind personality she becomes my favorite character of the Boatwright sisters. My least favorite Boatwright though is June. In almost every part of the book where June is involved something bad is happening or she isn’t being nice to anyone. With her mean personality she becomes my least favorite character. That is what I think of some of the Boatwright sisters.
As readers, the first thing we learn about the Calendar Sisters is the color of their house. It is a bright pink, Pepto-Bismol color, and I had no idea what to expect. The only thing I could gather was that the sisters were a strange, eccentric group, but other than that, I had no knowledge of them at all. I knew nothing about their personalities and characters. However, I was correct in thinking they were unique. Each sister is special in her own way, and all of them are especially kind for taking in Lily and Rosaleen into their home. August is wise and kind, May is sensitive and sweet, and June is protective and sarcastic. The new characters add a twist into the book because all three of them are so different, and anything can happen. For example, May is constantly breaking out in tears, and we also learned that there was a fourth sister who killed herself. All these details bring excitement to the book and make it a more interesting read.
ReplyDeleteI think that May is a lot like Lennie. May doesn’t exactly have mental problems, but she acts differently than most people do. They both had their own way with dealing with things. For example, May would hum “Oh Susana” or go out to the Wailing Wall, but Lennie would be more violent and use his strength to calm down. They are both very interesting characters. My favorite character is August. She is a very wise, all-knowing person. She is also extremely kind and friendly. Most importantly, she forged an important connection with Lily. My least favorite character is June. Lily has been through so much, and the least June could do is at least attempt to be nice to her. Every chance she gets, June has something rude to say to Lily. The worst thing she did was stop playing the music when Lily reached out to touch the black Mary’s heart. The Calendar Sisters are very interesting, and I’m curious to see what will happen to them later on in the book.
May, June, and August seem to be very nice people. For one thing they took Lily and Rosaleen into their house and they had no idea who they were. May seems to have a few problems. She means well though and she is very nice. Then there's June, she don't like Lily at all. She thinks that Lily should not be with them because she lies and is a little to go white girl. Lastly August, she is like an x-ray machine. She can see right throw the lies and all the talk and sees the good in someone. This is why i think she let lily and Rosaleen in the house. If anyone was alike to another character in an other book it would be Lennie and May. They both have a few problems, but they always try their hardest and are always nice. Out of all of the characters my favorite is August. She is my favorite because she is caring, does not care for what people say about here, and she always seems to know what is right.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Boatwright sister’s are very nice ladies. I think this because they took Lily and Rosaleen off of the streets and gave them food, shelter, and also happiness. August Boatwright is the oldest of the sisters and you can really tell. June and May always listen to August and she is kind of the head of the house. Then there is June Boatwright who is a little snotty. I don’t really like June because she is mean to Lily because Lily is white. Lastly, there is May Boatwright who is very sensitive. May is special because she will break down crying to about anything but she is very sweet. May is kind of like Lennie from Of Mice and Men because they both had a special quality about them that separated them from the rest. August is like George from Of Mice and Men because they both are leaders. My favorite sister would have to be August because she is really nice to take in Lily and Rosaleen and also she is a determined person to have her own business even through segregation. My least favorite would have to be June because she is racist towards Lily for being white.
ReplyDeleteI think the calendar sisters are a one of a kind family. All of their personalities and hobbies are so different. August is the eldest, and she is the one in charge. She always has the last say in things. She is a kind and generous person who is willing to help anyone in need. June is the more serious of the siblings and she is a little bit stubborn because she won’t marry Neil, who has asked her several times. She loves him, but refuses to get married to him because the last time she was supposed to get married, the groom didn’t show up. June also plays the cello. She is musical, but she resents Rosaleen and Lily and doesn’t want them to be living in her home. May is the youngest sister. She had a twin named April, but she killed herself when she was 15. After that, May was never the same again. Now whenever she encounters something sad she will start humming and possibly start crying. Then she will go to her wailing wall. However, May is usually cheerful. She loves to eat bananas and she also loves to cook. In chapter 8, she cooks a special lunch to celebrate the fact that she hasn’t been to the wall in five days.
ReplyDeleteMy least favorite sister is June. I don’t really like her because I think she is a little bit self-centered and bitter. She doesn’t want to help Rosaleen or Lily, and she doesn’t welcome them into her house. June doesn’t treat them with the respect August does. She also won’t marry Neil even though he has asked her numerous times. She only thinks about herself and she doesn’t consider how it will affect Neil or May. Whenever June argues with him, it causes May to become very miserable, but June doesn’t do anything about it. My favorite sister is May. May is my favorite sister because she is so cheerful and she makes the best out of everyday. She is very kind and she loves to please people. May always makes Lily and Zach lunch. She also made Lily a pancake in the shape of an “L”. I love that fact that she is so joyful and happy.
I think Lily is like Francis from Heroes because she also has a lot of secrets. Francis hides his identity, and Lily does too by lying about hers. Both of them are also on a search for their identity. Lily is trying to find more about her mom and what she was like. By doing so, she will find a missing piece of herself. Francis and Lily both have a mission to accomplish. Lily ran away from home to try and find more about her mother. August is like George from Of Mice and Men because she is the leader like George was. She tells everyone what to do and they listen to her. She takes care of May and June just like George took care of Lennie.
The new characters in the book took in Lily and Rosaleen to live with them for the time being. It appeared as though June did not want to take them in but August, being the older sister, did not oblige June’s request and instead let them live and work at their Beekeeping Estate. I think August is very nice, sweet, and wise due to the fact that she is the oldest and Lily’s mother possibly knew her. June appears to be very mean and stubborn because she does not agree with Augusts’ decision. May appears to be very sensitive because she cries a lot, but she is also the youngest of the three sisters. May is also very nice like August.
ReplyDeleteI would compare May to Lennie in Of Mice and Men because both of them are unstable and unusual compared to the other characters in the novel. May cries a lot and sings “Oh Susana!” in an attempt to stop her from crying. Lennie is also unstable because he accidentally kills Curley’s wife and many other animals. August is like George because like George watches over Lennie, August watches over her younger sisters. June is like Curley. Curley does not like other men talking to his wife and is very mean about it. Plus Curley holds a grudge against all people that are bigger than him just like June does not like white people. June also does not want anything to do with Lily so both of these characters have similar qualities. My favorite character is May just because she is so unpredictable and kooky. My least favorite is June because she is mean.
In the book I think the new characters are interesting to say the least. They are like a dysfunctional family. They don’t always get along but the have their upsides too. Just like every family have their upsides and downsides. But May doesn’t like Lily because she’s a strange white girl that came to their house because of T.Ray.
ReplyDeleteI can compare Lily and Rosaleen to Lenny and George. Because one gets into trouble and the other has to bail them out. My most favorite character is August because she took Lily and Rosaleen in and seems nice. But my least favorite is May because she wants Lily and Rosaleen out of their house.
I think that August, May, and June Boatwright are very diverse people. They all have completely different personalities, yet are all the same in a sisterly way! August is welcoming and sweet, May is emotional and nice, and June is a well- tempered woman. I think that if I could compare any of them to anyone else in another book, I would compare May to Lennie, because they are both very emotional people. I don’t have a favorite or a least favorite because they are all great in wonderful individual ways!
ReplyDeleteAlthough related, the Boatwright sisters vary greatly in personality. August, the oldest of the sisters, is the most respectable. She is more mature, and the leader of the family--the "queen bee," if you will. August is also kind of strangers, allowing Lily and Rosaleen to work for her, despite seeing through Lily's obvious fibs. The second sister, May, is very quirky and naive. She seems overly sensitive and has many strange quirks about her. For example, she does not eat bananas with bruises on them, and wanted to paint the house a shocking pink. I can relate May to Lennie, because they are both naive and trusting, and both can be slow when it comes to certain things. The last sister is June, who is negative and stubborn. She can be immature, not accepting Lily for her skin color, and is not quick to trust. She doesn't believe Lily's story about her aunt, and she makes it clear. That is why she is my least favorite character. June strings her boyfriend on, too stubborn to marry him, and she stops playing the piano as Lily touches the Mary statue's heart, just to show Lily she isn't accepted. On the other hand, my favorite sister is August. She is much more mature than the other sisters, and is sweet and gentle.
ReplyDeleteThe calender sisters are definitely your typical set of protagonists you would find in most books. They are obviously kind, some more than others, yet they are still so different from each other. My personnel favorite is August, simply because she is the neutral sister of the three, not as strict as June, but not as bubbly as May. My least favorite sister is June, because she is very mean and strict for seemingly unknown reasons.
ReplyDeleteI like August, June, and May. I know that Lily and Rosaleen may find them a bit peculiar, but once they get to know them everyone will get along. August is the leader. She knows what advice to give, and is the oldest and wisest. She doesn’t push the truth out of Lily; she waits for her to come around and tell her when the time is right. June has a soft heart- when you find the inside. She has these walls built up around her that you have to fight to get through. She is afraid of commitment because her previous fiancée ditched their wedding, and never showed up. May is probably one of my favorite characters that I have ever read about. She relates to you so much. She is silly and fun, and not afraid to act like a five-year-old. May has a crying problem though where she gets extremely sad over little issues. She is so lovable, like a little sister or brother.
ReplyDeleteI compare Lily to Francis. They both have no one to really look up to in their lives. The one person that they have lets them down. For example, Francis was let down because they raped his girlfriend. Lily was let down because she realized that T. Ray really doesn’t care about her, which makes her feel alone. My favorite character is May, because she brightens up the mood of the book. My least favorite character is the man that beat up Rosaleen. This is because I like Rosaleen, and I don’t like racists that try and beat up on women.
