  1. So far in the novel, the theme has writing hasn’t shown itself much. The only aspect of writing that was introduced to the novel is when Lily tried to write her “Philosophy of Life.” However, the influence and power of writing is starting to mature within the novel. The theme of writing expands itself when Lily and Zach go to Tiburon, home of a famous writer. This sparks up the controversy over whether Lily is going to be a writer when she matures, and whether she has the ability to do it. Zach’s tone implies that it’s just an impossible aspiration that could never emerge to anything, but Lily is adamant on becoming a writer. She uses her writings to escape from the stress in her life, and to escape into her “dream world.”
The theme of writing strengthens itself when Zach gives Lily the journal to write in. This shows Lily that if Zach believes that she could do, then she should believe in herself. The power of writing can break relations or strengthen them which is showed when Zach gives Lily his gifts. Writing is a weapon that only few can wield, but only few can use properly. Whether Lily gets the chance to even pick up the weapon, depends on how hard she aspires to be a writer
