Prompt:
ReplyDeleteLily wants a charm bracelet for her birthday.
Response Requirement:
* Speculate about what four charms she would want on her charm bracelet. Why? (Use a quote to support one of your charm ideas.)
* What would you put on your charm bracelet?
A charm bracelet is suppose to hints about the person it belongs to so I think Lily’s would include her interests. The first charm should be of a bee buzzing because of how Lily can relate to the bees and how they seem to give her comfort. She states, “Looking back on it now, I want to say the bees were sent to me. I want to say they showed up like the angel Gabriel appeared to…”. I think the bees symbolize Lily’s hopes and journey to be free in the way she let the bees free after capturing them.
Two other charms that would be good are a notebook and a pen. Lily mentions how her teacher, Mrs. Henry, inspired her to be a professor and an author. Lily mentions have a collection of having her own collection of writings and her love of reading, despite T. Ray’s disapproval. So I think this would be symbol of her hopes for the future and her dreams. Lily even mentions, “I kept a collection of my writings. For a while everything I wrote had a horse in it….I wrote ‘My Philosophy of Life’ which I intended to be the start of a book, but…”
The final charm should be a peach for how she spends her time at a peach stand selling peaches. This could also be a metaphor to how sometimes the sweet things seem to be taken away. Lily sells sweet peaches, and it’s parallel to how her mother was something good though Lily ended accidentally losing her. I think this means how Lily ends up taking away something good by herself even when she tries to make things better. Also, this can symbolize how peaches are sweet and take time and care to grow like many other good things which Lily will probably encounter when she runs away.
On my charm bracelet, I would put a heart, sun, paw print, and a peace symbol. Mainly I’d wear those charms because I’m a summer person and I love animals, and since love and peace are good symbols to wear around all day.
Lily is an interesting girl and would like to have four charms that truly reflect her personality. One thing that would mean a lot to her is a bee charm. In chapter 1, she said, “I want to say the bees were sent to me.....setting events in motion I would have never guessed.” This quote shows that she thinks of the bees as more than just insects. Another charm she would have would be a pair of glove. This would remind lily that her mother was always with her spiritually, if not physically. At one point, Lily had stuffed the gloves to hold them through the night. A jar would be a third charm. When lily heard the voice say “Lily Melissa Owens, your jar is open,” it gave her the thought to runaway and make her life better. Lastly, she would have a fan charm. The fan will show her that her life isn’t all bad and that she will have someone funny in her life like Rosaleen. Rosaleen went against the reverend and that will remind Lily of the time that she changed her life all by leaving her abusive father.
ReplyDeleteJust like Lily, I would like to have charms that represent me and my personality. The first charm I would have would be a volleyball because it is my favorite sport and it is an outlet for me. Another charm would show the more creative side of me. It would be a fashion mannequin because I love to design clothes that people may wear one day. Another would be a dance shoe to show that I have been dancing for many years and it is one of my many pastimes. Lastly, I would have a charm of a smiley face because it would remind of my mother. She always talks to me and it would remind me of all the funny things she’s said. The charm would make me laugh if I was having a bad day.
When Lily asked T.Ray for a charm bracelet for her birthday, he just stuffed more food into his mouth. But if Lily did get her silver charm bracelet, it would probably have a bumble bee, a honey hive, a Mary charm and a charm of a girl. The Bee and the hive would be there because of her love of bees. The Mary charm would be dangling on her rist because it would be like the one her mother once had and the girl would represent her mother, or herself being all alone but her standing, but strong. On my charm bracelet I would have at least 2 dogs. One for the many that I used to have but died, and the other for the dogs I have and the ones I may get in the far future. I would also have a suitcase and a book. I’d have them because I love to read and travel.

Happy Birthday! If I were to give Lily a charm bracelet, I think she would want four charms that represent her. One charm I would give would be a heart. This could mean love. Lily is the type of person who needs a lot of love in her life. Being abused by T-ray is not something any child would want to grow up with. Hopefully having a heart charm could show her love, which she really never had. Another charm would be a cross. Lily seems to be the type of person who is religious. She keeps a black Mary picture wither all the time. The third charm would be a world. I think she should have this because she is adventures. She likes to discover things no matter how small or how large they could be. Maybe it will encourage her to travel the world some day! The last charm would be a four leaf clover. I think Lily needs a little luck in her life right now because so many things are going on. It seems like she had luck staying with August, June, and May. If I could have a charm bracelet, I would have a sun, flower, heart, and a star. This is because everyone tells me I am a warm and down to earth person. I think these all represent me.
ReplyDeleteLily told T. Ray that she wants to receive a charm bracelet for her birthday. If Lily were to have four charms on her charm bracelet, I think that she would have a bee, a moon, a peach, and a book. Lily would have a bee charm on her bracelet because bees are a big focus in the book. Lily watched the bees buzz around her room as she tried to sleep. She caught them in a jar and soon moves to a farm with Rosaleen. There, bees are kept and honey is collected. Lily would have a moon on her charm bracelet as well. In The Secret Life of Bees, Lily mentions and relates herself to the moon a lot. On page 70, Lily says: “She had a faded red heart painted on her breast and a yellow crescent moon, worn down and crooked, painted where her body would have blended into the ship’s wood.” Lily is relating herself to the crescent moon that is worn down and crooked. She thinks of herself as crooked and broken, worn down from all that she has been through. A third charm that would be on the charm bracelet would be a peach. Lily’s father T. Ray spends most of his time in the peach orchards, which greatly affects her relationship with him. T. Ray also made Lily work at the peach stand each day. The peach would be a charm because Lily spent many long hours and most of her time sitting at the peach stand. The peach stand relates to the fourth charm Lily would have on her charm bracelet, which would be a book. It would be a book because Lily enjoys reading. Since she spent a lot of her time sitting alone at the peach stand, waiting for customers, Lily constantly asked T. Ray if she could bring a book along to pass the time when she wasn’t selling peaches. T. Ray denied her request and got angry whenever he did find out she was reading.
ReplyDeleteIf I had a charm bracelet, I would get a music note, a book, and a pencil. I would have a music note as a charm because I enjoy listening to music and spend a lot of my time doing so. I always have my iPod with me and listen to songs whenever I can. Another charm I would have would be a book. I also spend much of my time reading, and it is something that I love to do. Engrossing myself in the fiction and fairytales written for people to love and enjoy is something that I love to do as well. My third charm for my charm bracelet would be a pencil. I like to write, which would be why the charm would be a pencil. Whether they’re short stories or poetry, I have fun either way.
Lily told T. Ray that she would like to receive a charm bracelet for her birthday. Some of the charms that I think that she would like to receive are a moon, a book, a peach, and a bee. I think that she would like to receive a moon because she relates herself to a moon a lot. For example, on page 70, she says, “ She had a red faded red heart painted on her breast and a yellow crescent moon, worn down and crooked, where her body would have blended into the ship’s wood.” This quote relates to Lily because she says that the moon is warned out and crooked and Lily is also warned out and crooked because out everything that has happened to her. I have also chosen a book because Lily enjoys reading a lot and she spends her time reading instead of standing at the peach stand. I have also picked a peach because she sells peaches from the orchards because her dad makes her sell them. But really, no one really buys them. Lastly I have chosen a bee because she talked about the bees a lot and when she goes to the Boatwright’s house they collect honey.
ReplyDeleteOn my bracelet I would put colorful marble charms because I am a very happy and preppy person. I would also choose a hippo because I love hippos and they are my favorite animals. The third charm I would choose is a flower because I like to smell good and I would never go anywhere without taking a shower or not smelling as good as can be. Next, I would choose a present because I like receiving presents and waiting to open it to see the surprise. Lastly I would choose any food because I love to eat, and I don’t, im not in the best mood I could be in.
Lily wants a charm bracelet for her birthday. Four charms she would probably want on her charm bracelet are a bee, a heart, a gun, and a moon. I would say a bee because she seemed really determined to capture the bees in her room. Also, that she seems connected toward the bees in a way, the bees have never stung her once and it seems like the bees are her friends. I would say a heart because she loves her mom a lot and she’s the type of girl that just wants to be loved by someone instead of being yelled at. I would say a gun because it would remind her of her mother before she died. Theirs something that T. Ray is not telling her about her mother the day her mom died and maybe the charm would trigger something in her mind to remind her of what really happened on that day. I would also say a moon because Lily seems to like the night , especially when she was digging up her moms remainders outside and enjoyed the midnight breeze and the light reflecting off the moon.
ReplyDeleteI would put a musical note, a moon, a key, and a puzzle on my charm bracelet. I would have a musical note because I love listening to music. It’s really important to me and without music I would not know how to relieve my stress out of. I would have a moon because I love the night. I love whenever there is a full moon because the way the light reflects the moon is beautiful and it relaxes me. I would have a key because I tend to have lots of things locked up inside of me. Sometimes if I look happy, I may not actually be happy, so I tend to keep things from others. Finally, I would have a puzzle because my friends call me a puzzle and hard to figure out. They would try to figure me out, but it’s hard for them to. These are the charms I would have on my charm bracelet.
The four charms I think Lily would like to have the most out of any would have to involve two things from her mother, her joy of reading and writing, and her interest in bees. The two charms that would make her think of her mother would have to be about the things she found that were left of her, like her white gloves and the picture of the black Mary. For the remembrance of her mother's gloves, I think she would have a charm with just two simple white gloves. The one to represent the black Mary would just be a picture of the black Mary. The reason I thought Lily would like to have a charm that would make her think of reading and writing is because it is one of the things she has in her life that she can hold onto forever without having it being taken away by T. Ray or others. The charm would be a book with writing all inside and then a pen lying on the top to remind her she was the one who wrote all those thoughts down. The last charm that would signify Lily in many ways is her interest in bees. I chose this because before every chapter there is a quote that is always about bees and also Lily would sometimes lay down on her bed and just watch the bees swerve all around her making never ending buzzing noises. The charm that would symbolize her interest in bees would simply be a cute little be so she thinks good things about them, and not things like how they can sting her.
ReplyDeleteFour charms that I would put on my charm bracelet would explain me to the fullest. I would want to have a charm with a lacrosse stick, a charm with a calculator, a charm with a heart, and the last charm would be a music note. The first charm that’s the lacrosse stick is important to me because I love lacrosse and many of my friends play lacrosse so it’s nice spending time with them too. The second charm, which is a calculator relates to me because when I grow up I want to be an accountant me and every time I look down on it, I’ll think of how hard I have to try to achieve my dream job. The third charm is a heart. I chose a heart because love is an attempt to change a piece of a dream world into reality and means a lot to everyone, I know for a fact. They may not know it yet, but it will hit at some point in there life. My last charm that I chose was a music note. Music, to me, means so much. Every song has it’s own special touch to it and listening to them sometimes leaves you with answers for present problems, even future. I don’t think I would be able to live without my Ipod. Lily and I may not have the same charms, but by digging deeper you realize that we both have things to think about and goals for our future, which is one of the most important things in each and everyone of our lives.
Most people make wish lists for their birthday, and so did Lily. She only wanted one thing, a charm bracelet. Even though her father didn’t get her one, I think she would have wanted a glove, a book, a bee, and a heart as four of her charms. She would want a glove because it could remind her of her mom. Lily had found a few of her mother’s items before she ran away and of those items, there were a pair of gloves. Lily treasured those gloves, and once she stuffed them with cotton balls and slept with them during the night. Since she can’t carry the gloves everywhere she goes, she would want to have a white glove charm so that it can be with her all the time. Lily would also have wanted a charm in the shape of a book. Since she loves to read and write, a book would be ideal for her to have on her charm bracelet. Having the book could remind her to read more often and not forget about her dream of becoming a writer. I think that the third charm Lily would pick is a bee. The bees first came to her house the summer she turned fourteen. Lily says, “Looking back on it now, I want to say the bees were sent to me. I want to say they showed up like the angel Gabriel appearing to the Virgin Mary, setting events in motion I could never have guessed.” This is also the summer that Lily and Rosaleen went to live with the Boatwright’s in Tiburon, South Carolina. This was a very pleasurable time for Lily where she worked with the bees to produce honey for August. Having a bee charm would enable her to reminisce about the wonderful times she had there. The last charm Lily would want is a heart. For Lily, the heart would represent love. Throughout her life, Lily has experienced many hardships especially when she lived with T.Ray. Rosaleen was the only person who loved her. T.Ray didn’t love her, but Lily held the strong belief that her mom had always treasured her. That belief was the reason she ran away from home and possibly had the best summer of her life. In Tiburon, Lily stayed in a place where love held a family together, and from them, Lily will probably learn many lessons. A heart will remind her that someone in this world will always love her and that she is not alone, and never will be.
ReplyDeleteOn my charm bracelet, I would want a blue dolphin charm. This dolphin would represent me because my favorite color is blue and I love to swim. Dolphins are playful creatures and I love to have fun with my friends so this charm would symbolize me very well. I would also put a star on my bracelet. I would want a star on my bracelet because it will remind me to always try my best. There are a lot of other stars in the sky, but I know that through hard work and perseverance, I can always shine brighter than everyone else. It will also encourage me to be a unique “star”, and to always be myself, and do things that I believe in. The star will also help keep my self-confidence. It will remind me that I am a star in my own life.
I think that the four charms that Lily would like on her charm bracelet would be a bee, a picture frame, a black Mary, and a book. I believe that she would like a bee as a charm because the bees serve as Lily's guides in the novel. They help her move forward and they were the ones who gave Lily the idea to just leave T. Ray. Also, in chapter five, she says, "The air rained bees, and I sent them love, just like August said." This proves that Lily really did love the bees and so I would think that she'd want a bee as one of her charms. Another charm she'd love to get would be a picture frame. I think she'd like this because it would represent the picture of her mom she has. She always has it with her no matter where she goes. Maybe Lily would also like a black Mary charm for her birthday because black Mary represents Rosaleen and her mom. Also, she carries a wooden picture of black Mary all the time. I think a book would be a good charm to give Lily because in the beginning, Lily said that she would love to read, but T. Ray would never let her because he was so against it. She even said how her teacher would tell her that she was so intelligent and she should become a writer when she grows up. I think a book would be a great charm for her to put on her charm bracelet.
ReplyDeleteIf I had a charm bracelet, I would put a peace sign, a basketball and a heart. I would put a peace sign on it because it shows that I like things very peaceful. I don't like it when it gets too boisterous because I need to have peace and quiet. I would put a basketball on my charm bracelet because I love the sport, basketball, like Lily loves to read. Lastly, I would like to put a heart on the bracelet because it shows that I truly am a very loving person. I can't be too mean to someone and I am very caring and have a big heart.
If lily got a charm bracelet for her birthday she would get four specific charms. They would be a smiley face, a heart with a bow and arrow, an angel, and a bee. She would have a smiley face because she always has a positive attitude and is always nice and friendly to people. The smiley face describes her personality. She would get the heart with the bow and arrow since she has a big heart, she’s always loving but doesn’t get treated as well as she should which explains the bow and arrow. She would get the angel because she has an angel watching over her (her mom) and she never wants to forget her. Lastly she would get the bee because she says in chapter 1 that she’s lying in bed with bees surrounding her but they won’t sting her and that shows that there keeping her safe. The bee is her protection.
ReplyDeleteIf I ever got a charm bracelet my four charms would be a dance shoe, volleyball, a peace sign, and a lightning bolt. The reason why I would have a dance shoe is because whenever I dance it makes me feel happy because I love to dance! I would have volleyball because it is my favorite sport, and it takes up most of my time since I play for a club team and school! The peace sign represents the 80’s-90 because I wish I was born then since it was such a cool time to live through and the music was great compared to the rap music now. Lastly I would have the lightning bolt because I love, love, love watching lightning storms I think they are the coolest things ever to watch! I also like its shape haha!
I know this is more for girls and I’m a guy, but this prompt just seemed sort of easier than others. Anyway, if Lily were to have a silver charm bracelet for her birthday, I speculate that the four charms she would put on her charm bracelet would be a bee (obviously), a moon, a peach (oh wait, the peach might not be such a good idea because it might remind her of T. Ray and that’s not good. Ok, I take the peach idea back, just forget I ever said it), a heart, and a miniature pencil or pen or book. She would choose the bee because in the beginning of the book, she says how she compares the bees to the angel Gabriel appearing to the Virgin Mary, and how she feels that the bees were sent to her and were her watchful protectors. She feels comforted by the bees, not tense and alert like others. She would put a moon on her bracelet because whenever she’s lonely, she always mentions the bright, round moon. Even when she was at the creek with Rosaleen she dreamed about the moon and how perfect it was. The moon is one of her ways of overcoming misery, even for a small moment or two. She would choose a heart for her bracelet because heart almost always represents love, and it symbolizes Lily’s love for her mother. It can also represent Rosaleen loving Lily too. A miniature writing utensil or a book would go on her bracelet because she loves to write. Her teacher, Mrs. Henry, said, and I quote, “Please, Lily, you are insulting your fine intelligence. Do you have any idea how smart you are? You could be a professor or a writer with actual books to your credit. Beauty school. Please.” This influenced Lily to start writing novels, and now she has a passion for writing, which is why she should put a writing utensil or a book on her charm bracelet.
ReplyDeleteIf I had a charm bracelet (which I probably wouldn’t), the four things I would put on it would be a pencil like Lily, maybe a fork, a musical note, and a Pac man. I would put a pencil on mine because, like Lily, I love to write. I may not be the best writer, but I enjoy writing. Not like essays or reports, but rather short stories and novels. I’m trying to write one right now, but it’s not turning out very well. Also, in Korea, there’s this old tradition of when it’s a baby’s first birthday, they choose an item. The items that the baby can choose from are a pencil, a dollar bill, a piece of string, maybe a ball, etc. The items are placed on a rug and the baby chooses. Each item represents the baby’s future. The ball shows that the baby will be an athlete when he/she grows up. The piece of string would represent the baby having a long and happy life. The dollar symbolizes wealth and riches. And the pencil represents knowledge and a passion for learning. Guess what I chose? The pencil. Oh, and I also like to draw and sketch. Anyway, I would put a fork on my imaginary bracelet of sacred charms because, to put it simply, I love to eat. I love food, Mexican, Italian, American, Chinese, anything. A musical note would belong on my bracelet since I have a passion for music. I enjoy playing the piano and I like making songs up. (man, I think this prompt response is getting to be too long.) And last but not least, I would put a Pac man because I like playing games. Computer games, video games, board games, word games, math games, etc. And it seems that Pac man would sum it all up, as it is most likely a universal symbol.
