(3/13) What's Going on in the Pond?

Prompt:
There are bound to be some serious questions going on after reading Lily's fragmented flashback and reminisce of her time in T.Ray's house. What's on your mind?

Response Requirement:

* Write down a question (or two). Don't just ask the question. Supply reasons why you are confused.
* What is the line/quote you are reflecting on?

  1. One question I have is why the police officer didn’t stop the men from beating up Rosaleen in jail. When Rosaleen said, “He hit me until the policeman said that was enough,” it set alarms off in my head. It was cruel and I thought you weren’t allowed, as a police officer, to stand by and watch a person get beat up. Since the civil rights bill was signed just days before, it was supposed to be illegal to let others discriminate. If Mr. Gaston is discriminating against her then he shouldn’t be a police officer. I wondered how she could be in the hospital a few hours after the first attack. I had a feeling something had to have happened while Lily was at home with her father.

  2. I have a major question(well, in my mind) that i am wondering. Why did she grab the gun ? Now honestly, i would probably do the same thing if i was in that situation, but hopefully not shoot, just scare the dad away or something like that. But Lily held the gun, looked at her mother and father, and shot. So i want to know what was going on in her mind. How did she react about what she had just done.

  3. Who is really causing Lily’s mom to leave town? I would think it was T.Ray because he was really mean to Lily, and probably was the same to his wife. Even though he told Lily that her mom ran away because of her, one would believe he was lying. Was he really lying though? I would think so, but I will never be sure, he might be telling the truth. From this question I am reflecting on the line where Lily’s mom was packing a suitcase, and doing it very brusquely.
Why did no one get in trouble when Lily’s mom was shot? A normal person would definitely expect that T.Ray shot her, and he would be immediately arrested. Even if they believed T.Ray that Lily shot her, wouldn’t Lily be shipped off to some kind of special academy or a juvenile detention center. Was nothing done when Lil’s mom died? From this question I am reflecting on the part where Lily shot her mother.

  4. One question that is on my mind is, Was Lily’s mother being abused too? After reading the segment of the book when Lily describes the time when her mother was trying to leave made me think what really set her off and provoked her to attempt to leave. This kept me reading trying to find out what really did. If Lily’s mom was friends with August hopefully we will find out what really did motivate her. Another question that was very similar and related to the previous question was, if Lily’s mom did leave instead of getting killed would she have taking Lily as well. Both of these questions still haven’t been answered but hopefully they will be soon.

  5. As I read this book, a few things occurred to me. I tried to find the answers in the text, but couldn’t. I have a couple questions. My first one is why are African American people still treated poorly? The Civil Rights Act was already passed, yet the men in town stepped all over Rosaleen. She was free to act as she pleased, and they had no right to beat her. The worst part is that Mr. Gaston, the jailer, didn’t say a word. I fail to understand that if there is a law to prevent this from happening, why are innocent women getting hurt in their jail cells?
One more question I have is why did Lily’s mother leave? Actually, we don’t entirely know if she left because T. Ray could always be lying. Therefore, a better question would be was Lily’s mom really running away? If so, why? Was she mistreated, too? And if that was the case, why did she even marry T. Ray? There are so many unanswered questions regarding Mrs. Owens, and I hope as the book progresses, we get to find out the truth. As of right now, there are almost no clues in the reading so even remotely hint at what happened to Lily’s mom. It truly is a mystery.
