  1. Bee Yard Etiquette is an important life lesson. August states that the world is like a bee yard. The same rules of common sense apply in a bee yard as well as in the world in general. You mustn’t be afraid, since no person, or bee, will want to hurt you. You should still not be care-free-cover up and wear long sleeves and long pants. That’s like saying that you must still protect yourself in the world.
This lesson has had an impact on some of the characters in the story. For example, Lily needs to cover up when she is out in the woods. She had the comfort and protection of the peach orchard, but she needed to use her brain and realize that there could possibly be someone out there. That way, Lily won’t have to feel the stinging sensation of kneeling on the grits. That is how the Bee yeard Etiquette plays a role in the novel.

  2. August told Lily “the world was really one big bee yard, and the same rules worked fine in both places.” Bee yard etiquette is the way you should act when you are around the bees. For example, you shouldn’t be afraid because no bee would want to sting you and give their life away. You should take precautions and wear long sleeves with long pants as well. Third, you should never, under any circumstance, swat the bees. If you feel angry, then you should whistle because it will melt a bee’s temper. You should also pretend you know what you’re doing even if you don’t. Most importantly, give the bees love, because according to August, “Every little thing wants to be loved.”
“Bee yard etiquette” has greatly impacted the characters in the novel because each one of the characters follows one of etiquettes. For example, the rule where you should whistle when you’re angry is the etiquette that May follows. When May is sad, she will start humming the song “Oh! Susanna” in order to try and help herself calm down. When she is sad she won’t take it out on anyone. Instead, May goes to her wall and this way she can avoid “swatting at the other bees”. May also follows the last rule; to give the bees love. May gives her kindness to everyone; people and bugs alike. One example is when she tried to save the spiders in the house. Like May, I think June plays music to get rid of her anger and frustration instead of taking it out on someone else. June also tends to follow the rule that says to take precautions. You can tell that she is protective because she doesn’t trust Lily or Rosaleen. She knows that Lily is lying and she wants to make sure that there is nothing bad about Lily before she goes out of her way to help her. Another example of “bee yard etiquette” is with Lily. Lily is outgoing and she isn’t scared of many things. Even breaking the rules don’t bother her. She rescued Rosaleen from the hospital and from then on, the two of them were on the run. Lily isn’t scared to go on an adventure and she is willing to take chances. Despite her boldness, Lily also takes precautions. For example, at the Frogmore General Store, Lily got a newspaper to make sure the police weren’t searching for her and Rosaleen. Finally, there is August. She is a big believer in loving all the bees. She loves her sisters and takes care of them. She also loves the bees she works with and nurtures them to the best of her ability. Lastly, she believes in extending the love to not only the people around her, but to strangers as well. She agreed to help Lily and Rosaleen even thought she didn’t even know who they were. She took care of them and provided them food, clothing, and shelter. August let them join their family and they do everything together. As you can see, “bee yard etiquette” is very important in this novel.

  3. In the book August compares the word to be a big bee yard. Bee yard etiquette is the thing you should do in the bee yard. For example you should not be afraid of the bees or you will probably end up stung. Also no life loving bee wants to sting but if it has to it will. Lastly if you’re angry, whistle because it calms the bees down.
Bee yard etiquette impacted the characters by making every thing seem better. Like on the moon. Also it is cheery and happy. Without bee yard etiquette everything would be hectic. People would be mad and also get stung.
