Both Francis and Lily lost their mom first. Both of them left their home. Both of them hide who they really are. They give themselves sort-of a disguise, maybe not both physically, but emotionally and identity wise.
ReplyDeleteBoth Lily and Francis have a few things in common. In this book Lily lies about her last name to August so that if anything came up in the news about them she would not send her back to T-Ray. Lily also lied about not having any family so that August would not ask why she is at their house and not her house. Francis had a similar problem since he did not want anyone to know it was him beneath his scarf. Since Francis’s mission was to kill Larry LaSalle so he could not have people knowing who he is and his mission. Lily’s family life is not good since T-Ray abuses Lily and her mother is dead so she cannot help her with things or protect her from T-Ray. Francis comes from a similar back round since both his parents are dead and he has no other family. Both have to run away from their identities to make a better life for themselves or to help them do something.

Both Lily and Francis set out on this mission to find out something about a person or accomplish something. Meanwhile what they’re looking for is their own identity through this task. Lily lacks a family with only an abusive father, and Francis had no family what so ever. They both find an adoptive family as Lily sees Rosaleen as her “stand-in mother.” Meanwhile, Francis had no family and he clung to Nicole as a result, just to feel loved. Also, names may be considered an identity yet they are not your true identity. Francis has refused to give his identity to others or lied about it as Lily calls herself “Lily Williams”. Despite this, your last name doesn’t define who you are. However, your personality and your actions do define you as person and give you your identity. Lily may lie about her last name, but “Lily Owens” doesn’t give her an identity. Lily may be related to T. Ray, thought that doesn’t give her an identity of being like T. Ray. She acts differently and has a different personality. Over all, I believe you choose and determine what your identity is through your actions. (Actions speak louder than words.)
Francis lies with ease just like Lily does, but his name and his family doesn’t make him who he is. He made choices like gaining the courage to find Nicole and to accept the past for what it is. He made rash decisions and coincidently saved his comrades lives when he jumped on the grenade, in hopes of dying. Over all, Francis has this mission of finding and killing Larry LaSalle. This is just like the way Lily chooses to go to Tiburon in hopes of finding something about her mother. Lily and Francis go on this complex mission, yet all they find is that they had the answers all along. Both of them were searching for their identity through a complex operation. Of course, Francis finds that he had the answers all along as he talks to Nicole. Lily realizes she had all the answers she needed not by learning about her mother but learning about herself by being around the calendar sisters.
Lily and Francis both have secret identities. Lily hides what’s really going on and why she left home while Francis comes back to Frenchtown hiding why he’s there and what his real story is. Lily doesn’t really have an identity because she doesn’t really have anyone to rely on besides Rosaleen. She doesn’t really have a family or friends just like Francis. Lily’s mom died while Lily was young and Francis’ mom died also while he was young. These are some things that show how both Lily and Francis are the same or have a connection.
ReplyDeleteLily in Secret Life of Bees and Francis in Heroes both have similarities of hiding identity and personalities. Lily and Francis both lost their mothers at a young age. They both don’t feel right where they are in life, Lily gets made fun of by all the other kids in school and makes her own outfits; doesn’t think she fits in. Francis is inlove and he was in the war and he got his face blown off by a bomb. He knows that people look at him weirdly and know he doesn’t look right. They both don’t have very much when they have something they hold on and it is very hard to move on in life. For example Lily, she loves her mother very much but she barely knew her, she keeps her in her life which I think is very good but she needs to find something else to love and be comforted by. Another example is Francis he is in love with a girl named Nicole, she is very sweet and loves him back; and like ever love story there is a sad ending. Nicole fell out of love with Francis and she wants to move on, but Francis doesn’t ever see this because he feels comforted by her and doesn’t want to let her go. These are some text to text connections between the two characters in each book.
ReplyDeleteLily Melissa Owens, from the Secret Life of Bees, and Francis Joseph Cassavant, are in many ways, related. This is because they both try to hide their identities. For instance, when Lily appears on the porch of the brightly colored pink house that August Boatwright and her sisters live in, she lies to them and tells them that her name is Lily Williams. Just like that, when Francis was talking to Mrs. Belander, he lied about his name. He took his brother’s name and said that that was his name. Another connection is that both of these characters wanted to find out something. Lily went to Tiburon, South Carolina to see if anyone there knew her mother, Deborah. She thought that someone must have known her mom since she found a picture of Black Mary that said Tiburon, S.C. on the back. So she decided to go find out by going to Tiburon. Similarly, Francis had come back to Frenchtown after war to kill Larry LaSalle. Since there was a tragic incident that occurred, Francis decided that he wanted kill Larry for good. Also, when Lily was young, she lost her mom. Her mom was basically her only family because she was the only one who really loved Lily. T. Ray doesn’t have much for Lily, thus, Lily does not call him “dad”. Once she lost her mom, Rosaleen had to be Deborah’s replacement and take care of Lily. Likewise, Francis had also lost his family when he was young. He lost his mother when she was giving birth to his brother. His brother died almost right when he was born. Eventually, his dad passed away too, so he had to live with his uncle. Later, he began to like Nicole and took her as his only family. Lastly, when Lily shot her mother, she felt extremely bad, that she always asks for forgiveness. She is still angry at herself for unintentionally shooting her mom and now she feels really sorry. In the same way, Francis also wouldn’t forgive himself when he didn’t cry for help when Nicole was getting raped by Larry. He stood there even though he knew what was going on inside. He began to regret it a lot. These two main characters are very alike because they had many obstacles and problems in their lives.
ReplyDeleteLily and Francis may be totally different people but they share many deeper qualities. For instance they both lie about who they really are, they give you fake names. They both call them selves ugly but they heart is beautiful. They both ran away to get away from things, but Francis did it to kill him self…But otherwise there alike in many ways.

Francis and Lily both made up different identities to different people. They have both lost their mother when they were little and didn’t have an amazing childhood. Francis told his landlady he was someone totally different than who he really was. Lily has told the calendar sisters a different last name and where she is heading to. The only real family that they have had is their best friend. For Francis it was his love and for Lily it is Rosaleen.
ReplyDeleteLily Owens, and Francis Cassavant are very alike. For example, they both have “secret identities.” Lily has moved in with the calendar sisters, telling them a complete lie about her life. Lily says that her last name is Williams, and that her mother has died, her father has recently died in a tractor accident, and she is trying to find her aunt in Virginia. The truth is, her last name is Owens, her mother did die, but her horrible father is very much alive, and is looking for her. Lily is really there to try to find more information about her mother who died when she was only four years old. Francis Cassavant lies about his identity and life everywhere he goes. After he went to war, and got his face blown off, nobody can recognize him, and he can make any life he wants. For example, he visited a landowner who used to be a friend of his. Since she did not recognize him he told her he was just a veteran in the war who she had never met. They are both very lost, and did not know that they can’t lie about who they are forever.
ReplyDeleteBoth Lily and Francis have an last name and it gives niether of them an identity. They also had a family but that didnt define either of them. Francis went out to war to escape and Lily ran away from home to escape. They both lie about their past and pretend to be a different person in the present. they both come from a similar backround family. Francis has no parents and Lily has no moyher and a father she cannot relate thape or form. They are both also trying to seek out a long lost friends. For Francis its Nicole and for Lily its her mother Deborah. As you can see they have a last name and a family but no true identity.
ReplyDeleteLily and Francis have a lot in common. Lily does come from a family, but that family may as well be non-existent, as she tried to stay away from the violence of her father and Rosaleen on the sideline offering no help as a makeshift mother. Francis had his face blown off, to say it bluntly. Lily didn't but instead her heart; she killed her mother, which she can't help but hold it against herself. She killed her mother. Lily refuses to grasp the fact of incidents, so she stands in her tracks, repeating to herself, "I'm a murderer. I killed my mother." By killing her mother, she blew up her heart by blowing up her mother. Francis was betrayed or shocked by Larry LaSalle. Lily, the same, with T. Ray. T. Ray was violent, unreasonable, and showed no stability for Lily. I think it's proper to say that Lily's feelings are bottled up. If she showed them, her new name would be May Boatwright Jr. These are some reasons why Lily and Francis are alike, even though under varying circumstances.
ReplyDeleteLily and Francis are very much alike with their identities. Francis had an identity but it was taken away once his face was destroyed and Lily had an identity but that was lost once her mother left. Ever since Lily’s mother left Lily has decided to not take care of her looks and appearance. Just like Francis, Lily no longer has a beautiful appearance to other people. This gives away the fact that Lily doesn’t have a mother and that Francis doesn’t have a life, family, or an identity.
