  1. The abuse of the righteous looks like smashing lit cigars in people’s faces, pouring ketchup and hot sauce on someone, and beating people up. This is what the police let some people do to the black people that were participating in the diner counter sit-in.
The organizers had a set of rules for the participants to follow to be in the sit in. These rules were set up so that the sit-in was peaceful and well organized.
The purpose of the sit-in was to integrate diner/restaurant counters.
The local government allowed people to actually go into these restaurants, and beat the protestors. They didn’t like the sit-ins. The national government supported the sit-ins, and believed by these people sitting down, they are standing up for what they believe in.
The idea of nonviolence originated from what Martin Luther King Jr. had taught. He had always participated (and led) peaceful protests.
A text-to-text connection with Rosaleen’s experiences, is that she was beaten just like the people at the sit-in, and she was the one that was in trouble, just like the sit-in.

  2. Abuse of the righteous looks like tormenting innocent people. It’s not right and not tolerated anymore. Steps that were taken to ensure that the sit in was well-organized, they had planned out what they were doing and the government supported it and said they were sitting down to stand up for what is right. The purpose of a sit-in is to beat the protestors. The local and national governments both supported them in this plan. The ideas of nonviolence originated from what Martin Luther King Jr. had taught. A text to text connection to Rosaleen’s experiences were that she was beaten like the other people for standing up to what is right.

  3. A type of abuse is when the police let the violent group of people destroy the peaceful protest. They put out cigars on the students and they put condiments all over them. That is an abuse that is not only pure cruelty and dehumanizing but it also is going against the constitution which is surprising because the police, the ones who enforce the constitution are letting all of this stuff happening which shows how corrupt the police are. The steps that students took to ensure that the sit-in would be well organized is are they made sure that there would not cause any if the violence and to make themselves look nice so people would take them seriously and they also followed other rules to to make sure that everything would be as planned. The purpose of the sit-in was to try to get the diners and restaurants of the south to be integrated. It ended up to work at the end with a integrated America. The local and national government responded by really actually sending in angry people who hated the idea of segregation and let the beat and abuse the peaceful students. The idea of peaceful protest came from Martian Luther King Jr. He always knew that a peaceful protest will always prevail over a violent one and taught this to his fellow protesters. Some things that the sit-in protesters and Rosaleen have in common is that they both were abused and attacked even though they didn't even cause any harm.

  4. The abuse of the righteous looked very harsh because every one not just African Americans were beaten mostly by the other race though. This also occurred by the police and firefighters, which is surprising because they are part of the law and they are supposed to be helping the citizens not hurting them. Some steps taken to ensure that the sit-in was well organized were that they had good and fair police men that would hold the mobs back. The purpose of the sit-in is so that they can make things right between the colored people and the white people. Local and national governments reacted to this by enforcing the law of all men is equal. This law originated when Lincoln was president. Rosaleen’s struggles reminded me of one time when I read a book about slaves and how they all had to respect their owners.

  5. Non-violence is a method of protest used throughout time, it was Gandhi’s method that is featured in our history books. But, it requires the abuse of the righous, such as people being beaten for doing as much as sitting in a diner. One example of non violence is a sit in, the sit in was well organized in the fact that all participants wore nice clothes and sit up straight without giggling or retaliating to any resistance. The local government actually egged on the attacks on the sit-ins, but the national government forced the diners to serve the colored and white people. One person that was truly affected by this is Rosaleen, who took almost relentless beatings without apologizing or fighting back, simalr to the sit’-in previously mentioned.
