  1. "The whole fabric of honey bee society depends on communication--on an innate ability to send and receive messages, to encode and decode information." --The Honey Bee In chapter nine there were numerous tragic events that were all caused because of communication, or lack there of. Lily knew that Zach wasn’t going to snitch on his friends without even having to talk to him. He just had a look on his face that said I’m sorry but they are my friends. Also when everyone found out that Zach got arrested Lily could “read Rosaleen’s thoughts” and she thought just because you broke me out of jail, don’t get any bright ideas about Zach. Possibly the most important event in chapter nine was when May drowned herself in the river. She answered a phone call in which she learned that Zach had been arrested and that Lily, Rosaleen, August, and June didn’t tell her. She was pretty much zombified after the experience because it was so traumatizing for her. They had her best interests at heart but they didn’t expect her to answer up that phone call. In my opinion chapter nine is like Star Trek IV the Voyage Home, built around communication and how its absence can affect people.
