(3/27) Dissect a Song-- You pick!

Prompt:
As we all listen closely to the songs we listen to, it may become apparent that the song perfectly fits with what we read.

Response Requirement:
  • Pick out a song that reminds you of Bees. Provide us with a title, artist, and at least some of the lyrics.
  • Dissect the song and its meaning. Does the song relate directly to a character? a greater message? a theme?

  1. Where Is The Love- Black Eyed Peas

People livin' like they ain't got no mamas

Lily and the Boatwright's both do not have mothers.

But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate

You should love and treat everybody as equals for everybody you meet is fighting some sort of battle.

    People killin', people dyin'
    Children hurt

People kill themselves and get killed everyday just from being a certain race. And it hurts children when nobody will talk to them just because of their color.

    Where is the love

Why can't everybody be treated as equals?

    Makin' wrong decisions

People commit suicide due to discrimination.

    Infecting the young minds

Children grow to learn that they will be hated because of their skin color.

Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead in spreading love we spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity

Everybody should treat everybody else as equals. Make friends, not enemies, and eventually everybody will unite as one.

  2. The song that I chose that reminds me of The Secret Life of Bees is the song Breathe by Taylor Swift. Some of the lyrics are as follows: “…and we know it’s never simple never easy, never a clean break no one here to save me, you’re the only thing I know like the back of my hand…every little bump in the road I try to swerve, people are people and sometimes it doesn’t work out, but nothing we say is gunna save us from the fallout…” This song to me relates mostly towards three people: Lily, Zack, and T-Ray. It relates to Lily and Zack because now they are pretty much inseparable and they love each other and they are all each other has and knows. It relates to T-Ray because Lily can’t change her past and she cannot change who people are but T-Ray is all she will ever know. Nothing that Lily can say to the calendar sisters is going to change how things are going to work out because eventually they are going to find out that she has a father who is alive and looking for her and she knows that, that is her future.

  3. Waiting On The World To Change by John Mayer

    “Me and all my friends
    We're all misunderstood
They say we stand for nothing and
There's no way we ever could”

People of color are discriminated against. Others say that they don’t matter, and they never will. Some misunderstand the Boatwright sisters only because of their color.

“Now we see everything is going wrong
With the world and those who lead it”

There are so many problems with racism in Tiburon, South Carolina. Even though the president passed a civil law, no one is following it.

We just feel like we don't have the means
To rise above and beat it

    “So we keep waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
    We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
It's hard to beat the system
When we're standing at a distance
    So we keep waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change”

Some people simply wait and don’t take action because they are afraid of the law and the consequences. It’s difficult for citizens to fight against racism, due to the fact that they are so far away from the government.

Now if we had the power
To bring our neighbors home from war
They woulda never missed a Christmas
No more ribbons on the door

    “When you trust your television
What you get is what you got 'cause when they own the information ooohhh,
They can bend it all they want!”

May is upset from the news that she hears on TV about the segregation marches.

    That's why we're waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
    We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
It's not that we don't care
We just know that the fight ain't fair
    So we keep waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
    We're still waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
    We keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change

    “One day our generation
    Is gonna rule the population”

Lily has no problem with race, and is against the thought of racism. She hopes that the government will take more action and fix what is going on in her community.

So we keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
Now we keep on waiting (waiting)
Waiting on the world to change
    We keep on waiting (waiting)

Waiting on the world to change
Waiting on the world to change
Waiting on the world to change
Waiting on the world to change.

  4. Unfaithful By Rihanna

    Story of my life
    Searching for the right

Means that Lily is searching for her mother

    But it keeps avoiding me
    Sorrow in my soul

Lily can't believe what T Ray told her about her mother

    Cause it seems that wrong
Lily feels wrong that she is always lying to the Boartwrights about her and Rosaleen

    He's more than a man
And this is more than love
The reason that the sky is blue
    The clouds are rolling in
    Because I'm gone again
And to him I just can't be true

  6. “but you said love taste so much better when its cruel”
Maybe this is what T-Ray believes when he uses cruel punishments on Lily. Maybe he is loving her, but doesn’t know how to correctly.

“to you everything was just a game,
    yeah you played me good,
But i want you, i want you, i want you,
So much more than i should,
    Yes i do.”
This is how Neil feels when June refuses to marry him so many times. But, she still keeps coming back for more and leading him on. Finally, after May died, she did agree to marry him.

“Oh it hit me like a steal freight train,
    When you left me,
And nothing ever hurt like you”
This is how Lily’s mothers’ death effected her. Life was not, and will never be the same because of it.

“that you dont get to taste the honey,
without the sting of a bee”
This is kind of what to whole story is about. Nothing comes easy. You need to go through some hard things to get to where you want. August helped Lily see this.

    “yes you stung me good,
oh yeah you dug in deep,
but ill take, ill take it, ill take it
Till im down on my knees.”
This is how Lily felt went T-Ray forced her to kneel on grits for hours on end. She was strong and didn’t complain.

“There's nothing that we can't go through,
Walk a thousand miles on broken glass,
    It wont stop me,
from making my way back to you”
This is exactly what Lily and Rosaleen did to find out about her mother. They went to Tiburon, walked miles, and did what ever they had to just to find the Boatwrights’.

  7. “Holding on, the days drag on Stupid girl, I should have known I should have known. This isn't Hollywood, this is a small town. I was a dreamer before you went and let me down
now it's too late for you and your white horse, to come around.” White Horse, By Taylor Swift, my all time favorite artist, I think relates to Lily and T. Rays relationship. Lily waited out her whole child hood for her dad to love her back and show some sort of affection, but that never happened. She always hoped, like with the Valentine’s Day card that she made T. Ray, that he would love her back, that’s where “I was a dreamer before you went and let me down,” relates. Also with, “Now it’s too late for you and your white horse, to come around” She realized though as she was sitting home awaiting her dad to come back home with his newly thought up punishments, that she didn’t want to wait around anymore for him to realize that he has a daughter that loves him. The moral of this is that she feels guilty about really everything that has happened in her life and blames no one but herself. In that way, I do believe lily is being ignorant. Why does she feel the need to take full responsibility for the pain that her own father brought upon her?

  8. Breakaway – Kelly Clarkson

This song relates mostly to Lily, who is the main character in the novel we are reading.

Grew up in a small town
Lily originally grew up in Sylvan, which was a small town.

Dreaming of what could be And if I’d end up happy
Lily always dreamed and wished that she could have a better life. She wanted to be happy, but she never really was living with T. Ray. He’d yell at her and punish her, which usually made Lily very unhappy.

But when I’d try to speak out, Felt like no one could hear me
Everytime Lily would try to talk to T. Ray or tell him something, he’d always yell back or just ignore her. So, she felt like no one cared.

    Wanted to belong here
Lily and Rosaleen tried to belong and fit in at the Boatwright’s, since they weren’t familiar with beekeeping.

Out of the darkness and into the sun
When she escaped from T. Ray, which in this case would be the darkness, she went to Tiburon and met the Boatwright’s, who ended up being the sun, causing Lily to be very jubilant here.

    I‘ll take a risk, take a chance
Lily had to take a risk to help Rosaleen run away from the hospital. She had to take a chance so that they would be able to live a better life rather than live a miserable life with T. Ray

Though its not easy to tell you goodbye
Lily doesn’t want to tell the Boatwright’s goodbye. Therefore, she’s holding back from telling them the actual truth of how she escaped from Sylvan.
