  1. The book cover that I like that most was the secret life of bees. I like this cover better because it very eye catching. The water color really blends together. The pictures really look like real characteristics of the bee. the images go great how he used he water colors.
What I can predict about the novel is that I will be bout bees just from the cover. Obviously. I think it will always be about a painter. I see the paint brush in the water .

  2. I prefer the 2nd picture because of the name. It is called “secret life of bees” and the 2nd picture has a jar with bee’s honey. Also it says a New York Times bestseller. And the picture is painted, which gives it a different look and feel about it.
I can predict from the cover that it’s about a bunch of women and something about bees. I am guessing that they live on a farm and that they aren’t very wealthy and get by in life with having each other.

  3. I personally like the second cover better, the one with the jar. I like this one better because it’s simpler and it looks better to my eyes. On the other cover it has too many things happing and it can give away some of the info about the book. The cover I chose looked nicer with all the lighter colors, the other is all yellow and hurts your eyes. I haven’t read the book yet but from looking at the cover I could tell that it’s going to be about bees, there house in the country…as you can see on the picture. But other wise I’m quite clueless about this book, but I think its going to be like all the other books we’ve read in school so far.

  4. I personally prefer the second cover for The Secret Life of Bees. This cover doesn’t as much going on as the first one. It’s easier to look at and doesn’t have critic reviews everywhere on the front. I also like the way the title is written. It is right in the center and draws my attention. The image is a beautiful, picturesque piece of art. This cover is calm and doesn’t have that much going on. The first cover has too much on it and is a bit confusing.
Based on the cover, there isn’t much of the story given away. All I can really predict about the story is that it is actually about bees. Based on the title I can predict it is about a child who is interested in bees and thinks about their world compared to ours instead of our world compared to theirs. The main character may be bee-pro and the bee is there favorite insect. The bee is a very important topic to them. I also think that this story is taken place during the past in maybe the late 70s or early 80s.

  5. I would prefer the first cover because it is colorful and the images make the book look interesting. The words ‘phenomenal number one bestseller’ tell me that the book is very popular and many people like it. The images show that the book has a lot going on so it won’t be boring to read. The other cover looks like a book that might actually be about bees because of the bee by the jar of honey. If I was in a book store I wouldn’t pick up the book because the cover looks boring.
I can tell that the book is about girls and maybe they want to find out more about the picture in the top left corner. The house in the bottom corner and the picture both look old so I think the book took place many years ago. The other images on the cover look like they have a special meaning in the story so maybe there will be a lot of emotion throughout the story.

  6. I like the bottom cover better between the two, because it is simple. The bottom cover shows a symbolic picture with kind of dark colors that set a mood. The jar of honey also has a bee hovering near it, which ties in with the title, and the title makes you want to find out what’s so secret about bees’ lives. The bottom cover also tells a lot about the book to. Based on the cover, I would predict this book takes place on a honey farm, and the “secret life” part of the title hints a mystery or mysterious story line with some conflict, despite the relaxed look of the cover. All of these features give the bottom cover a good look of depth and interest.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I like the first cover because it is a busy cover and it has many things going on. Also, the colors pop out and it looks better and more attractive. And the words are written large on the cover so it sticks out compared to the other one.

I think that it is about a bee that makes honey and a girl that goes places with it. I also think that she may have the ability to talk to the bee and find out what its life is like, hence the title “The Secret Life of Bees” Then they make a lot of memories with it and those are the pictures that are on the first cover.

  8. Above you will see two different covers of our next novel.

Response Required: Cover all parts of the question.
    • Which cover do you prefer? Why? What do the colors, images, and words do to persuade you to a favorite?
    • From these covers, what can you predict about the novel? Note: If you have read or watched it already, please do not give away vital information. Focus more on what the images themselves could represent. Thank you. :)
I like the first book cover better than the second cover. The second book cover seems to be older, but the new one seems to offer more of an idea about the book. The jar is just.. there, if you will. A bee floating by, seems like something is trying to catch it. The new, more vibrant background sports a bright yellow background, which shows a happier, droller, story, rather than something more glum, dark, more mysterious.

The new cover has a girl at the bottom. The girl shows she is probably the main character in the whole story. This cover gives a little bit more away than what you would see through the jar. Also, I also like this cover because it is just nicer.

From the cover, I notice that there is a girl in the story, most likely vital to the story. From the other cover, there is a jar, with washed out water and a paint brush. This shows painting might be something important. In the other cover, there is a barn-looking house, and that shows this may take place on a farm.

    ReplyDelete
  9. THIS IS NOT FINISHED
The cover that I prefer is the second one, the one on the bottom. I think this cover tells readers more about the story, because it shows a honey jar and a picture on the jar. It also shows bees. I think this cover is colored nicer and is prettier. The title of The Secret Life of Bees looks more presentable than the first cover. The bottom cover caught my attention first and the most. I also think the second cover looks more professional and looks like its for older children, but the first cover on the top, looks like a book a younger child would read, for example in third or fourth grade.

From the cover, I could predict that something will have to do with bees. I also think it has something to do with a house, and a person who maybe sells honey or jars honey. I also can predict that the main character will be a girl because there is a little girl on one of the covers. Maybe the little girl, the main character, might have a problem she has to figure out.

  10. Both covers are very vivid and help me picture what the story may be about. I enjoy the top one, with the girl in it, the most. The bright yellow background automatically pulls me to it. The pictures on the sides give me multiple hints as to what the story will include as well. The title is also very big and right in the center, helping me see it right away. From these covers, I can predict that this story will center around bees, since there are bees all over the cover and the title includes the word bees. The house in the top cover looks like it belongs in the country, so that may be where the story takes place. It also shows a black and white picture, suggesting that the story may have taken place possibly in the early 1900’s. The second cover looks like the story involves bees being captured so people can get their honey. They both are very detailed covers, which help show me what The Secret Life of Bees will be about.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I prefer the second cover because it is a type of cover that would make a person wants to read this book. The colors, images, and colors persuade me to want to read this book because the cover shows a lot of colors and it states on the top saying that it was the New York Times best seller. This tells me that it was probably a very good book to read and many people liked the book. The image of honey was very persuading because it was in the center of the cover.
From the covers, I can predict that the novel will probably be about bees or something to do with bees. I think this because of the honey jar in the middle of the cover. There is also a bunch of green in the back which tells me that the setting will probably take place outside of in forests.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I prefer the first cover for the secret life of bees. The bright colors are more interesting to look at and its eye catching. I also like this cover because there is small pictures on the outside of the book that gives us hints about what the book might be about.
From these covers I can predict things that the book might be about. I can predict that the book is going to be about a little girl that collects pictures of cars. I can also predict that this book might be about the little girl that likes to investigate the life of bees. This book might also be about a normal family that lives in a normal size home and the family that likes animals especially bees. <333333

  13. I prefer the cover with the honey jar, because it doesn’t show as much. It just shows a jar of honey, which is something we all know bees are a huge part of, so it tells us that theres more to bees than honey. Also, the other cover is not as artistic, and it wont catch the average persons eye

    ReplyDelete
  14. I prefer the first cover because it has bright colors and is very eye catching. People would be more interested into this cover because of the way it gives a prediction about the story. My favorite is the girl, Lily, with the detail in her hair. It stands out the most to most people who like bright and beautiful colors. The Secret Life of Bees will be a great book, as I predict.
I have never seen the movie or read the book, but I can tell it will tell a lot of secrets of bees. People will be swatting the bees and trying to kill them, but bees help our environment and make honey, which for us is food. Other than that, this book will be a great book.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The cover that I prefer more is cover number one. I prefer this cover because it gives me more of a preview about what I should except from the book. There is more of a visual idea about the book based on the pictures on the front. The images tell me a lot about what could happen in the book. For example, the is an old photograph of the a women in the top left corner. This makes me wonder who she is. Maybe she is related to the other girl that is pictured facing backwards in the middle. The girl in the center of the cover is most likely the main character because she is pictured as the main idea on the cover. It also look like to me that, she is looking at all of the images surrounding her like she knows something about them or they mean something to her. The fact that there might be a little story just on the cover of the book makes me like it more than the other cover.

From these covers I can predict a few things about the novel. For example the book most likely has something to do with honey because that is the main idea of the second cover. I can also predict that the girl on the front of the first cover most likely plays a huge role in the book because she is the center of attention on the cover. I can also predict that the girl on the front has relations with all of the other pictures on the cover because she is almost watching them. I think that this book is going to be very good just based on the covers.

    ReplyDelete
  16. In my opinion, I like the second cover a lot better. I think it will explain more about what the book will be about. I like the watercolors that basically complete the entire cover. I think that all the colors blend really well, and go with what the book will be about. I also think that this cover is better, because it has nothing to do with the people in the story. You can just imagine what the people will look like from the descriptions in the book, instead of seeing a photo on the cover. I think that this cover will truly make you think what the story will end up being like. Every little detail, I think will have something to do with a part of the book in some way, shape, or form. I also like how the title is in like a cloud shape. It’s like the cloud wants you to think about what the cover means. From this cover I think it could truly tell a story. There is a jar full of honey, and there is a bee next to it. I think the bee and honey will have a huge part in this book. I predict that the story will be about someone who has bees, and makes honey from them. I can also predict from this cover, that the person, who makes the honey, will be religious in some way. Since there is a saint on the front of the jar, the woman probably is very religious, and believes in many different kinds of saints. From this cover, I think that the story will be very good, and kind of sad, because the colors aren’t too bright on the cover. This cover is very descriptive, and has a lot of meaning toward the story, that is why io like it a lot better than the first cover shown.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If I had to pick one of the two covers I’d prefer the first cover because it seems to explain the story better than the second. The first cover has more pictures that seem to help the reader understand what they are out to read in this book. The second cover only has a bee with a jar of something next to a window. The first one has a girl and around her are all kinds of things that must be incorporated in the story because they wouldn’t be there if they weren’t. To me I think as a reader I would rather see what I am about to read and have an idea of what I am bout to read. In my opinion I think the first cover is way better because it shows the things that are in the story and maybe they are important and those being on the cover could help you remember some important parts. This cover not only helps you but I think it looks better than the other.
From the pictures on the novels, I can predict that the story will be about a girl who loves bees and watches them and maybe writes about them. It also looks like she try’s to catch the bees with a jar of honey. It looks like she keeps the honey by a window. To me it seems this girl is obsessed with bees and all she does is try and catch them to maybe draw them or write about them. These pictures both give good clues to how the story goes but the first has more and shows the main character. I think this book is all about a girl who loves bees.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I like the bottom one since there are good colors. I like this cover because it shows a little picture of what the book is about. It shows that there is something about bees and how they live. I think that the book is about someone wondering how the bees live then becomes one. As the person goes on they figure out how bees feel and think about humans. This then causes the person to have a new out look on life and how they see people. The colors on the covers say that it is a mysterious yet lively book.

  19. Out of the two covers, I prefer the first one. I prefer that one because it is very colorful and it draws my eye. I know we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but I can’t resist. The cover is fun and bright, who doesn’t like bright colors? Also the font of the title popped. As soon as I looked at it I knew that it was the, “Phenomenal Number One Bestseller.” I didn’t have to pick up the book, and take a good look at it to learn this. The other cover didn’t grasp my attention as well as the first cover. The second one is pretty, but the lack of pictures doesn’t give me a good idea about what this story is about. The only image it has is what looks like a jar of honey with a bee circling around it. I prefer book covers to give you an idea about the book and it’s plot. That is why I prefer the first book to the second one.
Another reason why I like this cover is because it has many imagines that help give me an idea about what this book will be like. One of the imagines was a dog tag. I know that soldiers used to get dog tags in the military for identification. This made me think, was one of the characters a veteran? Also, on the cover there were many bees. Which you would expect since the title of the book is “The Secret Life of Bees”. What important role do bees play in the story? Does the main character collect bee honey or something of that nature? There was also a picture of what looked like a car from the early 1900’s. That made me believe that this was the time period of the story. The most important picture, in my opinion, was the image of the little girl. “The book must focus around her,” I thought to myself, I think she is the main character. All of these imagines gave me great insight to this book even though I have never read it. That helped me make my predictions.

  20. I like the second cover a lot better than the first one. I think that if someone were to walk into a bookstore, they would want to read this book just by looking at its cover. It is much more attractive than the first one because it has more color, pictures, and detail. Also, the title is bolder and bigger so it is more eye-catching. The reader can gather a lot of information from looking at the second cover. The first one just has a jar of honey on it, and the reader can’t really predict anything. While looking at the second cover, the reader can make lots of assumptions.
Being a reader, I can look at both of these covers and make my own assumptions. Judging by the first cover and the title, I can conclude that the book will have something to do with bees. I can also predict that the main charcter will be a teenage girl who goes to school and has a lot of hobbies. I found all of this information just from the second cover. I’m sure that the characters will have internal and external conflicts because characters in novels almost always do. Since the theme this year is about humanity and the importance of family, I’m pretty sure the book will have something about those themes, too. Just by looking at the covers, I could predict all of this. I am curious to see what the book is about, and if I am right.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The cover that I prefer is the second one. This is because it is more attractive to me, since it has a nice pretty picture on the front that most likely symbolizes the book. It is also very well painted and attracts the eye. The colors are soft but bold which makes the cover look nice. The title of the book attracts you because the boarder of it is so bold it makes the words pop out almost! The first cover is kind of ugly; all it has is big letters with scattered pictures everywhere. Yes, it does make you look at it but it’s not very attractive when you do. The colors all look the same except some are lighter than the others. I would also prefer if the pictures were drawn or painted like the second one because it makes things more calm and pretty! Overall the second cover is the one I prefer!
From these covers I can predict that there is a family with a daughter who doesn’t get along with everyone very well. I predict this because in the cover she is alone by herself and there is a nice home in the background. Also that she starts to study and research bee’s to take the place of her “friends”. I think this because of the title “the secret life of bees” and also I would predict this since there is a journal in the cover that is half way open, the girl could have kept notes in this journal. I can predict that she has a father or a family member that is in the war because of the dog tag on the cover, and when you go to war you get your own dog tag to wear. The charm bracelet that is on the cover could have been given to the girl as a gift; I predict she gets a bee charm for it since she’s interested in them. I am able to predict all of this from the pictures on the cover.

    ReplyDelete
  22. From the two covers above, I think they both provide insight to the novel. Judging from the colors, images, and words the cover on the left persuaded me to be my favorite. The cover on the right doesn’t really say that much about the book because there is only one image. The cover left however has several pictures that could all symbolize the main point of the book. The words persuaded me because they were stronger and gave more insight to the book. There are also more words that describe the book. The colors also played a part in persuading me to choose the cover on the left as my favorite cover. The colors in the cover to the left are generally brighter that attracted my eyes. The cover on the right’s colors were generally darker and didn’t show what was behind the jar of honey.
Judging from the cover on the left, I have accumulated an idea for what the story is about. There is a little girl in the center of the cover that is probably the main character because she is the only human on the page There are several bees in the images on the cover that I think symbolizes a honey production business her father owns. There is also an old small house which I believe is the little girl’s house. The house is pretty small so she probably does not have a lot of money. I also noticed an old car so the book most likely takes place in the early-mid 1900’s. I observed multiple bracelets that I can’t read what’s on them so maybe they were the little girls mom’s or grandma’s bracelets. You can always judge a book from its cover.

  24. Based on the title of the novel, I think the second cover is clearer. To me, the title of the book makes me predict the book to be about as soon as nobody is around, bees start talking to each other and eat human food and do human jobs. The first cover of the book is extremely confusing for such a simple title. On cover two, it is a simple picture going with a simple name, and the picture matches the title of the story.

The colors on the second cover are more realistic when talking about bees. Bees are usually (well, supposed to be) outdoors. When I think of outdoors, I think of the color green because of leaves and plants, oh and especially honey. It is a known fact that bees love honey. So out of the two covers, the second one is more realistic.

  25. In my opinion, I like the second cover the best. I find that the second cover seems more classic and traditional than the first cover. The first cover looks to be more modern, while the second one almost looks as if it could be a painting. I prefer the font of the second cover, and I like the colors that are used for the background behind the honey jar. The first cover seems somewhat misleading because it seems a bit busy with all of the different pictures.
From these covers, I can predict that this novel will have something to do with bees. I know this because the title is “The Secret Life of Bees.” Also, on each cover there are bees buzzing around. On the first cover, there are a series of pictures with bees around them. On the second cover, there is a jar of honey with bees around it. It’s likely that bees will have some sort of special meaning in this story.

  26. I prefer the first cover shown. This is because it has more pictures to represent what the book is about. It also gives you reviews made by critics to help you decide whether this is the right book for you or not. The colors on this cover are soft and inviting. They really draw you to the book. This cover gives images that have more to do with just bees. This gives you some more background information on the book.
The first cover lets me predict that the story is about someone’s past. This is because it shows an old photo of a woman, and a locket necklace that may be important to the main character. The second cover focuses more on the main idea of bees. It shows a jar of honey in an older fashioned kitchen. This helps me predict that the main character maybe collects honey from honeybees, and this causes a problem. This problem could create the climax of the story.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I first looked at both book covers and thought that the second one was a lot better then the first book cover. Because the watercolors just really look good on the cover with the honey jar, it gives you a chance to think about what the story is going to be like without giving the story away. Also, the first cover really confuses me, why do they have to put so many things surrounding that girl with the braids? I don’t understand it I personally think it gives you too much to think about and you haven’t even read a sentence of the story yet! The second one seems to enhance your ability to think about the story and make your own assumptions on what the book is going to reveal. In the beginning of every story everyone has there own thoughts of what the book is going to be like. With the first cover, I think its going to be about a girl with a lot of things going on in her life because it shows a big house, a car which might mean travel and a lot of nature which might give the setting of the story away. The second cover leaves a hint of mystery about it and doesn’t give you any obvious preconceived notions about the writing. What I predict about the story is that it will be about a girl with a lot of things going on in her life, and maybe bees somehow help her cope? I know it sounds odd but maybe they comfort her.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I prefer the second cover that only shows the jar. I like it more because it is simpler and doesn’t confuse me like the first. The red jar by the window has a sense of mystery to it. The bee that is flying to the jar also attracts my attention to the book. The cover seems more “mature” than the other one. The other book cover seems like there are too many subjects to cover. It looks like something an elementary student would draw for a book cover. It takes a pretty smart mind to make a simplistic drawing that can also attract the attention of a thirteen year old. I am now excited to read the book because of this book cover.
I think this book might have something to do with a girl’s life and she is going to keep a journal. She might be a smart girl with minimal problems in her life. Maybe she will have a second life that she doesn’t tell people about. She must be an artistic type of person because she has a jar of an unknown red liquid by her window. To me that screams artist. In all it seems like a girl with a good life and then a problem will walk in. She must have to use her wits to get her out of it. This is just my assumption of what might happen.

  29. For the book The Secret Life of Bees I think the first cover should be the one chosen. I prefer this cover because it has really good color on it and since it has the color green I think its showing the book will be little more mellow then the other ones we read. Also something else I really like about it is it has little pictures. I like this because its showing some of the things in it and also I can kind of predict what will happen in this novel.

The pictures on the cover of this book show me that I think it might take place on a farm because the house looks like it is one that would be like a farm house. Also there is dog tags on the cover so I think it might take place during a war. Lastly there is a picture of an old car it most likely means that this takes place back in the olden days.

  30. 3-3-10 I would prefer cover

    Blogger 8
I would prefer to have the first cover because it grabs my eye better then the first. The first one I think its better because it has the picture of the girls on the front and pictures of things that you might see in the book. It has a house so that might end up being the girl’s house that is on the cover. The cover also has a necklace on it so it could be the girl’s necklace and it might be important because it is the cover. The cover also has a lot of pictures of bees on it so the girl might like being around bees in the book. I also like the color shading; on it it goes from a light green to a light brown on the bottom with a color in the middle. The cover also has the words in big letters so you see it first unlike the second one.

From these covers I can predict a lot that might happen in the book. I think that in the book the girl that is on the cover moves to a new town and in her house there is a bee hive. The girl’s mom might make honey for a living and that attracts bees to the house. I also think that the family of the girl gets a new car and she finds the necklace I it which she really likes it. There might also be a tree outside of the house that has a bee hive in it and eventually the tree starts to die. The bees also might start to like her and follow her around which can make people think she’s weird.

  31. I prefer cover number 2 because it is more artistic and gives you a better visual of the story. This persuades me as a favorite because of the good artwork. The cover shows me that it has some religion in the story. This cover was done very well is my favorite pick. From the cover I can predict that the book will have something to do with bees. Also the window might mean someone will escape or enter. The picture of Jesus shows religion located somewhere in the book. Finally the fact that this is a bestseller proves that this is a very good book to read. The second pick is the one I chose.

  32. I prefer the second cover much more than the first. The first cover looks like a children’s book- it is too colorful and bright and doesn’t really foreshadow anything about the book (I saw the movie.) The second book cover, however, really catches your attention. It makes you think and want to read the book to see what it is about. Also, the first cover is a little bit too modern-looking for the time period. The watercolors in the second cover really blend together and interest a prospective reader.
From these covers, I can predict that the novel will be a melancholy story, with as many happy moments as there are sad ones. I predict this because the cover of the book looks sad for some reason. To me, it represents a change that happened in one of the characters lives. Another thing that I know about the book is that the symbol is a bee. We will have to wait and see how Sue Monk Kidd uses this symbol!

  34. I prefer the cover on the top. I like it better because the title is written more clearly, and it is easier to read. On the second one the title is smaller and it doesn’t stand out on the cover. Also, the cover on the top is more eye-catching than the second one. Orange is the main color and it stands out more than the blue on the bottom cover. I prefer the first cover because it has more pictures that could give you hints of what the book will be about. The second cover only has a picture of a jar with a bee. Overall, I think the first cover is better.
By looking at the two covers, you can predict what the novel will be about. Since there is a girl and a bee on the cover you can tell that the story will be about a young girl. The girl may have an interest in bees. She might try to take honey from beehives, which is why there is a jar on the second cover. I also think that family will be an important aspect in this story because there is a picture of a house on the first cover. You can also tell that this story doesn’t take place very recently because of the type of car shown on the top cover.

  35. Prompt:
Above you will see two different covers of our next novel. (3/3 pm)

Thank you. :)

I prefer the first cover mainly since the colors and images capture my attention. This cover gives hints about the book such as the main character is a girl and the life of bees is metaphor of how she can relate to bee. The bright colors and images about the girl and her life appear interesting. Also, two positive quotes are better than one and are more likely to persuade the reader to read the novel. Over all, I prefer the first cover since it captures my energy. The other cover is too dull, and doesn’t give hints of what the novel is about.
From glancing at these covers, I can tell several things. For one, the main character is probably a pre-teenage girl since the back of a girl’s head is shown and it appear this girl a pre-teenage cover. I can tell that the bees are a metaphor to the girl’s life. Also, it is a reflection of a girl’s life from the photographs. As well, this story may have some conflict in her house since the girl’s home is on the cover. I predict the novel is about a pre-teenage girl who can relate to bees, in a struggle, and is reminiscing her life.

  36. I prefer cover 1 because it has more pictures. This allows the reader to make inferences on what the book is about. These pictures could either make someone read the book or make someone not want to read the book. The second cover does not at all represent what the book is about. Not only does this cover have pictures, but it also has a couple comments from people who read and enjoyed the story. The cover really captures my attention and I really want to read the book now because of it. It seems like the kind of book that floats my boat.

I can predict that the novel is about a girl who has many bees living with or near her and she treats them as friends. But there seems to be a mystery about this story because it almost looks like they are showing parts of a mystery on cover 1. This is what I can predict about the story from looking at the covers, especially cover 1.

  37. The cover that I like the best is the first one. I like it because it shows many different many different things that may be in the book. It shows a house, a picture of a woman who could be character in the book. It also shows potentially a locket or necklace that is important in the book. It has paper on it possibly a magazine or book. It might be the house that the main character lives in.
In this novel I can predict that it will be about a girl who lives in a state like Alabama. Her mother will have past away and she has a picture of her. It will be way back either near the Civil War or American rights movement. She will miss her mother who passed away and has one picture of her that she cherishes. She wrights in a journal that she keeps track of everyday. This book looks very interesting just from the cover!

  38. I prefer the first cover because it seems like it shows many scenes of the book and it grabbed my eye when I looked at the title because it is much bigger and bolder than the second one. Not only is the title nice and bold but it gives me a look of the story and not only bees like the other one. The one on the right didn’t really persuade me that much because I rather a clear image of the book rather than a painting. The first cover also has nice colors put into it, nicely and faded.
From both of these covers I think that this book is going to be about a girl who is searching for something/someone and goes to bees for advice. The bees may comfort her and be there for her like one of her friends. I think that this girl will be traveling in order to find what she lost because on the first cover it shows some kind of house and like in the book “Heroes” Francis was looking for Nicole and maybe the girl is looking for someone like her mom, dad, or even brother or sister. That is what I think this book is going to be about.

  39. Out of the two covers there, I prefer the first one, the one with the larger letters. My reason for my opinion is because it draws my attention better. For example, the appearance of the illustrations seems brighter and I believe more people will prefer to pick up a story with bright colors on the cover since it stands out. That cover also seems to say more about the book due to the images bordering the cover. The other cover just has a honey jar and a little bee. For example, in this cover, it seems to show symbols that may be important in the story. That could possibly help in keeping those images in the reader’s mind to create a deeper understanding of the book. Also, the fact that the words are larger tends to draw one’s attention because they stand out.
From looking at the cover, one can predict something about the novel. For example, when you look at the images that border the cover, you will see a house and a bee. From that, you can see that the setting is possibly on a bee farm. Considering the agricultural aspect, you can infer that the story may even take place somewhere down south. In the corner of the cover, there is a photo of a woman by a nice car. I believe that could either be someone the girl may have known in the past or it may symbolize that nice things aren’t the greatest. It may just be saying that it’s the necessities that count. Lastly, the novel is definitely about a young girl because she is on the cover and all the images must have to do with her.

    - I prefer the first cover. It is way more colorful and it shows sort of what the story might be about because it has a few pictures involved in it. It also shows the girl that is in the story, so you can see kind of what she looks like. It only shows the back of her head so you can’t see her whole face, so you can’t see fully what she looks like. It shows her house, or some house in the book, and it shows a paper of some sort. This is why I like this cover. It really stands out.
    - From these covers you can predict it will be about a bee or a few bees or tons of bees, but it will probably have to do with bees. This cover also shows that it will have a conflict. These conflicts can have to do with bees. That is how it helps me predict.

  41. Im not coming back till 8amMarch 3, 2010 at 2:40 PM

-Both covers are colorful and obviously give you more insight to the book. I honestly prefer the second one, because it’s more elegant and sophisticated then the first one. The second looks like you could find it in the fiction section in the public library, while the first one you find in an Elementary school library. What I’m trying to say is that the first cover gives off a more childish vibe, with its many pictures surrounding the cover, while the second one has a portrait of honey and a bee hovering by, which goes perfect with the title ‘the secret life of bees’ because you are thinking to yourself ‘ I wonder what that bee does, other than collect honey’(that question might tie into the story itself)while the first cover shows you more of symbols that might represent something in the story. I am a person with a more mature taste (but I do enjoy a little bit of everything), so the second cover appeals to me more. This actually depends on who you are pitching the book to, if you were trying to appeal to an older audience I say go to the second cover but I you were pitching to young adults go with the first cover. Yet if you’re trying to get everyone to go for the book I say change the cover all over again.

-By what the covers represent I say that the main character will be a girl, with brown hair just like the girl in the first cover. She might be facing a couple of challenges that might include or be represented by the symbols on the cover in the future because she is facing the rest of the pictures. The story might also include a big secret as the title says “The secret life of bees”. It might also be that the characters have a secret life.

  42. • I prefer the 2nd cover, because it is a painting instead of a photograph. One reason I like the second on e more is because I like art. The colors perused me, because they are bright, and yellow happens to be one of my favorite colors. From the covers I can predict that the book is obviously going to include bees, and maybe include a secret or two about their lives. The bees are maybe going to make honey and stay around a certain house or person.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I prefer the first cover because it kind of gives a hint to the story with out giving it away. Also the second cover doesn’t tell you a lot about the story it just says that it’s about bees and we can infer that, that is about by the cover. The first cover seems that the story is about a girl. And I’m guessing that the girl is a very busy person by how there is a lot of stuff going on.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I prefer the second cover because the story is called the “The Secret Life of Bees” and the second choice seems like it has more to do with the title. The first cover seems like it has nothing to do with bees or being secret. It is just a little girl staring at a whole bunch of weird things that have nothing to do with bees. The girl is staring at a house and I do not understand how that is fascinating. The second cover makes more sense because there are bees and honey. It is more eye catching than the first cover too because the first is almost all white. The second cover has a bee floating around the honey so it probably symbolizes something in the story. Usually a lot of bees go to the honey but in the cover there is only one bee.
I can predict that the bees are probably symbolic in the story because most people don’t like reading stories about bees, including me. It is also probably about a curious little girl because on the first cover there is a girl looking at different things. She is looking at a house, a picture of a car, a twig, and some grapes. I do not find that interesting at all so I can predict that the girl is observant. I have a feeling I will not enjoy the story.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Out of the two covers, I prefer the second one. This is because it doesn’t tell too much about the book, and it looks intriguing. It gives away enough information so that you know the book isn’t a nonfiction book about bees, but you still can’t tell exactly what it is about. That always draws me to a novel. In addition, the painting on the cover is very pretty, and nice to look at. It’s very simple, and not all over the place and distracting. It has the perfect balance of beauty and simplicity.
From looking at the two covers, I can tell a few things about the novel. It looks like it must have something involving bees at some point in the story, obviously. I can also tell the main character will be a young girl, as it appears on the first cover. The leaves on the second cover makes it look like the book takes place in autumn. From the second cover, I can tell that someone in the story will be an artist, because it looks like there is a paint brush in the jar. I look forward to reading The Secret Life of Bees!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I prefer the bottom cover because it is more inviting and enticing. The bottom cover is much simpler while the top one is very complex. There are seven different pictures on the top cover and a picture of a girl. They are all on the outside edges of the cover while the bottom has one picture and the focus is on the center. There is too much in the top one to focus on. The bottom one allows us to look at one simple picture instead of many complex ones. I also prefer the title font and the box that it is in (in the bottom cover). The jar in the middle of the bottom cover brings the whole cover together because it is one big picture instead of several pictures. I also like the bottom picture because it almost looks like it was painted or drawn with pastels while the top cover looks like it has real pictures mixed with drawings. There is simply too much going on in the top cover.
I can predict that this book is going to be about bees, and possibly a little girl because of the girl and the bees on the cover. I can also see in the top cover (which gives more information than the bottom cover) that there is an old car which suggests that this story would take place some time ago. We know that it is sometime after the invention of the car therefore the setting is narrowed down greatly. One of the pictures on the top show what almost looks like a farmhouse with grain in the foreground. Then this could take place on the Great Plains. The top cover shows very much about the setting, where as the bottom picture does not hint at more than the fact that there are bees. Even though I believe that there are too many pictures on the top cover, I feel that it gives us more insight into the setting and ultimately to the rest of the book.

    * From these covers, what can you predict about the novel? Note: If you have read or watched it already, please do not give away vital information. Focus more on what the images themselves could represent.

I prefer the bottom cover because there are a lot of good colors in it. The words that I think that persuaded me is "A New Times Best Seller." That really persuaded me. Also the pictures in the cover are really colorful. I think it really shows what the book is going to be about.

I think the book is going to be about bees, what they do or what is going to happen to them or something. Maybe they are going to be in a honey factory where they make honey.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The cover that I prefer is the second one, the one on the bottom. I think this cover tells readers more about the story, because it shows a honey jar, a picture on the honey jar, a bee, and a lot of detail. It also shows bees. I think this cover is colored nicer and is prettier. The title of The Secret Life of Bees looks more presentable than the first cover. The bottom cover caught my attention first and the most. I also think the second cover looks more professional and looks like it’s for older children, but the first cover on the top, looks like a book a younger child would read, for example in third or fourth grade.
Also I think this story will take place on a farm or in the country side.

  49. The cover I prefer is the one on the bottom. One reason I prefer this is because im already used to seeing this one. I also think that it gives more insite to what the story is about, considering the title is the ‘Secret Life of Bees’ and the bottom one has honey on it. Also, the first cover looks so too childish. It looks like the type of book that you would read when you’re in third or fourth grade because it’s got so much going on. Another thing is that the second one is simpler. Because the book is so complex, and there are so many things going on, I think that having a simpler cover would contrast the story well. Also, the second one is more eye catching because no other book looks like that. If I saw the first book on the shelf, I would just think it was like any other book. Another thing is that it’s the New York Times best seller, so it would have to be a great book.

From these covers, I predict that the novel will be about bees. It also might have something to do with honey, because there is a honey jar and a bee on it. It will be about a young girl with brown hair because there is a picture of a girl on the top book cover. This young girl probably lives in a far- like house, because of the wooden house on the cover of the first novel. Lastly, I think it is going to be a wonderful book because of all of the comments on the two books, like ‘Eccentric, inventive, and ultimately forgiving.’ – Anita Shreve.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I prefer the second one because to me the colors and the setting is inviting. It is not too hectic and it has bees on it just like in the title. I think that the novel might be about mothers and daughters because that is what is in the caption on the bottom of the page, and also I think it is going to have to do something with honey or bees because that is what is on the cover, and also maybe what is on the jar. It looks to be almost as if it is a person. I also think that the window might have something to do with it, and the face that there are leaves in the background.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I prefer the the second cover because it is as if the picture was painted to so the light and dark sides of the story, the good and bad if you will, and portray them in an unique manner of color giving the reader thoughts on how the story is going to happen and gives me a feeling that it has some lighter, cheerer moments unlike the last few stories we have read.
I have never read the book or seen the movie but I almost did with my mother but saw the begging and thought it was depressing, but from the little knowledge I have I am going to believe that it is a girl who lives with her dad that has always been fascinated by bees.

    ReplyDelete
  52. For the book The Secret Life of Bees I prefer the first cover. I prefer the first cover because it hints at what happens in the book. Also the images persuade me to choose this one because there are many images and many focuses. Not only one topic is shown like the second cover. The words on the book also persuade me to choose this book. I always see “New York Times Bestseller” on a book, but “The Phenomenal Number One Bestseller” is different. This comment is much more enticing than the first one. One other thing that appeals to me is how the pictures are. In the second cover the pictures look like they are painted and are quite blurry. In the one that I favored the pictures are clear and you can obviously tell what they are.
From these covers, especially the first one, I can tell many things about the story already. First of all I can tell from the girl on the front of the book that she is the main character, or that she plays a very important role in this story. I can also tell , like the cover hints, that bees play an important role in this story. I can tell this because on both covers there is an image of a bee. The other objects on the front of the cover probably are also important to the story also. These objects include a dog-tag, a photograph, a flower, a building, and a necklace. Although, you can’t judge a book by looking at its coverr.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I prefer the second cover out of the two because I like the illustration and because it is different. The first book cover is not as original it looks more like anything else you would see on a bookshelf. If I saw the first cover it would stand out to me and I would immediately want to know what the book was about. Like most book covers it tells whether it is a best seller and it is which is something that draws attention to the book cover as well. Since the first cover has a picture of a girl on it I assume the book will be about a girl, preferably a young girl. I also think the book will have bees associated with it because the name of the book and that there is honey on the cover.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I, unlike most people, personally prefer the first cover. I mean, every time I look at the second cover, all I think is, ‘Woohoo, a jar…. Yeah, a jar…’ The first cover seems a lot more exciting and interesting. I like how the images are placed; they remind me of a collage. Also, the background for the first cover is bright and cheery. The second cover is boring, and I don’t think it really matches the title, The Secret Life of Bees. We already know that bees make honey; that’s no secret. Also, in the first cover, they use the word ‘phenomenal’ in ‘The Phenomenal Number One Bestseller.’ It makes the book seem even more extraordinary, and plus, everyone likes the word phenomenal. It’s an awesome word. If you think about it, when you’re in a bookstore, will the first or second cover be more eye catching? Many people read books by their covers, and most people would probably reject the second cover, thinking, “A jar of honey. How fascinating.” (sarcasm, sarcasm).
From these covers, I can predict that the story, if in first-person, will be in the point of view of the girl. Or maybe it might switch from girl to bee and back. I think that the girl and her family are poor but grateful and nice, and maybe the bees help her and her family out. Or maybe the girl and her family own a bee farm and makes a living off the bee’s homey. I have a feeling that either the girl’s mother or father is dead. I don’t know why.

    ReplyDelete
  55. My preference on the cover is ultimately the first one. I chose the first one simply because it stands out to me and shows significance in what can be foretold. A visual cover such as the first cover is one that involves many pictures that can easily give away information on the basis of this novel, “The Secret Life of Bees.” By just gazing at the first cover it already tells you that it probably will be a story regarding a girl. Also, the title is enormous but it’s alongside many significant images too. This second cover I think might not be to distinct because there is a container of honey present but no conclusion to its full meaning as to whether it will be about bees in which they produce honey as their “Secret Life,” or something else. The first cover is more specific by telling you that it will not only be based on bees, but a girl also. Not to say the second cover is prosaic because clearly it’s meticulous but prosaic on character or meaning. This is my side on the two different covers and come to a consensus on the primary or first cover.
My prediction as to what the novel will be based on is that it will be about bees and the girl who favors bees also. Telling by the first book cover it’s a given that there will be a girl present, but at the same time the book is also about bees. Another image that is also evident is the house. This house is probably the house in which the girl on the cover lives in. Also, the car might be what the girl’s parents might’ve owned if she has parents. Overall, the illustration of the girl is highly likely to be the domain of the book and the book will be told in her point of view. The last item I gravitated towards was the comments by two people. The comments were, “Wonderfully written, poignant, and humorous,” and the second comment is, “Eccentric, inventive, and ultimately forgiving.” These comments also informs me that it’s involves humor and detailed writing throughout. These are several predictions I have about “The Secret Life of Bees” in which is considerable towards the full meaning of the book.

  56. -I prefer the second book cover because it is more of a serious cover to me. I have seen the movie to this book and it is a very serious book that isn’t all happy. I think the idea that the second cover is a real painting also brings me in because it seems more real to me. The second cover also has honey and a bee in it so it brings me to the idea that the title “The Secret Life of Bees,” actually makes me believe that the book has something to do with bees. The colors in the background of the picture also made me think of the summer time so this makes me want to pick this cover even more because I love the summer time. I also like how the font isn’t only one font and the writing is different in all of the different boxes of words. This is all of the things that persuade me to pick the second title cover.
From this cover I can predict that the story will have something to do with bees based on the bee on the cover and the honey. Bees make honey in the summer time so I would predict that the story takes place in the summer time. I also predict that the book is going to be descriptive with colors because the picture on the second cover makes me think of a lot of beautiful colors all in one place. I can also predict that the characters in the novel will be religious and the book will talk a lot about religion because the honey jar has a saint on it.

  57. I prefer the second cover because it doesn't seem to give away as much hints as the first cover does. The images show that you need to read the book to find out more about it. I also like how the background picture is colored in a distorted way. From the first cover i can tell that the book is about a girl who probably likes bugs or insects. From the second cover I can tell that somebody likes bees so they leave a jar out to help the bees eat.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think I like the bottom cover better than the top cover. It is a very nice painting and is much more mature and sophisticated. It has the jar by the window with the bee floating around it. It says “the secret life of bees” and it makes you wonder what’s going on and what could the bee be doing and what’s so secret about it. I also find it interesting that the Black Madonna of Czestochowa is on the honey jar and I would like to know what that is all about. The top cover is very complicated and there’s a lot of stuff going on and the pictures but I think the second cover, which is much simpler, gives more information about the story. The picture is great and in the blue it says that it is a wonderful novel about mothers and daughters. So that gives a sort of preview of what it will be about. The way the title is written and the yellow thing it’s in also look interesting. I think this will be a good story and I am looking forward to reading it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. To me, both covers provide an ambiguous picture to what the book will be about. Bees. However, the first cover seems a lot more archaic and bland. It doesn’t seem as vivid or tranquil as the cover on the bottom. The cover on the bottom gives the reader an insight of the setting of the books without going over the top like the cover on the top. The cover on the top is insightful, I’ll admit that, but it is almost overwhelming with the leaves, bees, girl, and random settings. It looks like a page out of the 1980’s, whilst the lower one provides the majority of that information without going overboard with reviews and whatnot. As for the actual title, the cover on the bottom is a lot more elegant and resplendent then the one above. The one above is so mundane and distasteful, if an illustrator proposed the exact same title font; it would be rejected for being way to average. I can concur from the cover that the story will be about the hidden life of bees and how they are similar and different from the main character’s life which may or may not be a human. This is why I believe that the cover on the bottom is much more lively and interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I prefer the second one because it looks more like a way to express the story with not giving away too much. The picture also represents the title with a jar full of honey witch represents bees witch the people in this story must represent. It also shows a way to show a somewhat calm story when the second one is one which shows a less calm picture. I also fell that in this story people will have to deal with hardships and people who have to deal with a lot to help somebody out. The story depicted by cover show sadness because of the colors. The colors are dragged down like a type of crying. It’s like the author is trying to show that there is sadness in the story but happiness because and sweetness because of the honey. That is why that cover is far superior to the other on because the second cover is not too complicated and shows a little bit about the different emotions in the book. It is not know for sure if the story is sad one or a happy one but it can still be determined as presumably as a sad and happy one. Unlike the first cover the second one is hand drawn and is painted which shows more of the artistic value of some of the characters in the story. Most of the time people just want to know a little bit about the story. That is what the second cover shows. The first cover shows a little to much and makes the book look like its full of action when it might really not.
When I look at these two covers I predict that this book is going to deal with a struggle that has to be resolved. It also tells me that this book is also going to be about family values and other things like that. Even the title The Secret Life of Bees sounds like a type of book that involves a type of secret that needs to be protected like the Diary Of Anne Frank. I think that this book is going to incorporate a lot of old things and I can tell that from the first cover where there is a black and whit photographs that were used before they came out with the color cameras. It also shows in the covers that this book's setting is going to be in the south because of the different pictures of southern bugs and such on the first one. The honey pot also resemble it because honey is made in the south most of the time. All in all this book will presumable be about trust and about dealing with hardships but dealing with them with the people you care about the most.

  61. -In the novels Heroes, and Anne Frank one of the themes that I believe related to each is secrets and secret lives. I think this because in Anne Frank, Anne and her family along with other families had to secretly hide out in an old house above an office building because they were Jewish and not wanted. They were not allowed to live in their own house anymore because if they did they would be taken away to a concentration camp. They had to live a secret life for years and had to let people think that they were somewhere else, somewhere safe. They could only walk around the house at certain times so no one would suspect that they were still in the country. There whole life was a secret for a very long time, a secret that was eventually revealed. In the novel Heroes, a boy names Francis has to secretly be someone he is not to complete his mission of killing a man who deserves to die in his eyes. Francis comes back to his hometown, Frenchtown with no face. His face was blown off in the war which he was a soldier in. When returning to his hometown he only wanted to do one thing, kill Larry LaSalle. With no one knowing who Francis was anymore, with his new secret he could now finish what he was there to do. A search for identity is also a big part in these novels. In Anne Frank, Anne is alone for most of her life in the safe house, trying to figure out who she really is since no one seemed to like her. Anne was trying to be someone that every wanted her to be but really she didn’t know who she really was; she was searching for her identity. It turned out that there were people who liked her for who she really was and she then found her identity. In Heroes Francis has more than one identity but he truly didn’t know who he was. He was Francis, a good boy when he left to fight in the war, then during the war he jumped onto a bomb to save the lives of others and went back to his hometown a new person. Francis could now have whatever identity he wanted, but what he really wanted was to be unknown so he could finally do what he always wanted, to kill Larry LaSalle. This is how these two themes play a role in these two novels.

  62. Answer: 1.I prefer the cover up on top of the page for these reasons. On this cover it has many bright cherry colors with interesting pictures that infer things that might have to do with the book. Not only that but the words of the book are actually some comments from people who have reviewed the book. Although I cannot completely read the comments I can tell that they are positive and it persuades me to want to read the book. Some of the phrases are “wonderfully written” which tells me this is a good read. On top of that, the cover also says that it was a bestselling book, which makes me want to read it even more. That is how the text persuades me to read the book, but the pictures also convince me that I should read the book. On the cover the pictures vary, kind of tell an interesting story, and pop out of the page. Also the words are written in a cool font and are colorful which make the cover more intriguing. While on the other cover, it just has a few words on it and a picture. That is why the top cover is my favorite one.

    2. From these covers I can predict a few things that might happen. In both covers and in both titles there seems to be a main idea about bees. The titles of the books are “The Secret Life of Bees” and there are pictures of bees on the cover. So maybe the book has to do with the main character making a home for bees to stay in so the main character could talk about their feelings to someone. Also some of the pictures on the cover look like they have to do with stuff 30 or 40 years ago, so I am going to guess the book takes place 30 or 40 years ago. Not only that but there is a girl on one of the covers which must mean the main character is a girl. Finally putting both the covers together, I am going to predict the story is about a girl who lived sometime in the 1960s or 1970s in a small town and that she enjoyed sharing her feelings to bees.

  63. Between the two book covers, I prefer the second one. The second cover has a more classy, and unique edge to it. In the second cover it may be simple, but it explains a lot. The title of the book is “The Secret Life of Bees”. Even though there is only a jar of honey on the cover, it could mean big things. In my opinion, you shouldn’t have a lot of detail on the cover, if part of the title says “Secret”. Yet, some people may not realize that it looks simple, but it has detail in the art. I could tell that the book may take time a little bit later because of the wallpaper on the bottom. That is an example of the little details. In addition, the second cover has a painting look for the front cover. I think that pops out more because it’s different than most covers. I think that this story will be about a girl who is adventures, and likes to try new things. As I said before, I think that it will take place a little later than now because of the wallpaper. I also think that this book will be about a girl that loves insects, and pays more attention about bees. I think that this will show us secrets not only about bees, but also how this girl takes a role in the story.

  64. I would prefer the first cover because it shows symbol’s that I think might have to do with the book. The second cover didn’t show anything that symbolize the story. All it has is a bee jar and a window. Although the colors make the second cover pop, the first cover has more of a fall feel, and it makes me feel like something tragic or depressing will end up happening, like a family member or friend dying.

Some things I can predict are that the girl lives on a farm, since it looks like there is a ranch. There is also a locket. I think this will represent the a friend, who might end up dying otherwise they probably wouldn’t have put the locket on the cover. Something else I saw was that there was a girl, who I’m guessing is the main character of the book. I wouldn’t have guessed that from the other book cover, since the book only has a bee in it.

  65. I prefer the bottom Cover because it is very simple. But in its simplicity it has many details. for example, it shows how honey is a big part in the story. I also really enjoy the background how all of the colors fuse together to almost make one color. In even deeper detail you can see a little bee buzzing around the air. This tells me that they get deep into the story and it complexity of the story. This is why i enjoy the bottom cover more....

  66. The cover that I would prefer, is cover number one, this is because this book Secrete Life of Bees; it doesn’t mean it’s all about bees it could be about a girl and each symbol on cover one means something about her or something about the book. Also there were more colors in the cover and more illustration which drew my attention to the cover. (But I don’t judge books by their cover). What persuaded me to pick cover one was the quotes and symbol/pictures on the cover.
By these covers I predict that this book is about a girl and her life and there are quotes about bees that have meaning to the story and can relate to what happens. It gives me a better look of what the story is about unlike cover number two (in my opinion). Cover number two was plainer and had a simple picture, while cover number one had more pictures and illustrations also quotes that have meaning to the book. So if I had to pick between cover one or cover two I would pick cover one…. What would you?

  67. I prefer the cover on the bottom that just has the mason jar full of honey, with fluttering bees buzzing around the top. I prefer this cover to the other ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ cover because, in a sense, it is more “grown up” and sophisticated. The one on top seems more fit to be a children’s’ novel, then a New York Times best-selling novel. The cover on top show pictures of multi-colored bees and simple pictures that would look more interesting to a child. On the other cover, however, it looks like an oil painting of a honey jar with fluttering bees all around it. This is more enticing to me because although it’s very simple it makes me feel like I get the general feeling of the novel, without even reading the title; I know that the book is about bees. Whether they play a main role in the novel or they are just a symbol is unknown, but they have to play some part. Also, the fancy script and writing of the title on the book in the one on the bottom make me feel like I’m reading an advance book, rather than a children’s story. From these covers what I can assume about the book would be that it is about a young girl who discovers a secret about bees, whether sinister or kind-hearted is unaware. I can also assume that the girl is not afraid of the bees because they are openly flying around and the girl isn’t running away or scared of them. Another image that can give us some information about the story is that they have a mason jar full of honey. Since it is not in a “store bought” jar or bottle of honey, we can assume that the characters in this story either bottle honey or are close with someone who does.

Another point I have to make about the two covers is that (although it goes against my idea that the second cover is the one that should be posted) the first cover tells the readers that the story will indeed be about a young girl. We can tell that it is a young girl because of the height and the pony-tails. The other cover, however, does not tell us such. Besides giving us the general knowledge that they story is about bees it does not include who the main characters (such as the little girl) are, like the first cover does.

And another reason that the second cover should be published is because it reminds me of certain memories of mine. Whenever I see an old movie, or read a suspense novel, there is always a part in the book where a mysterious figure (whether it being and old man or woman; grandfather; older, creepy family friend) pulls a book down from a bookshelf and you see an old book with fancy writing on it. And the second cover reminds me of that, and that's why, if I saw it in Boarders or in the library, I would pick it up and check it out.

  68. I prefer the second cover on the bottom. I like this cover better because it looks original and it looks good. In the picture I can see a little bee flying around a jar of jelly or something. Also, on the top of the second cover it says A New York Times Bestseller which attracts me more to the book. I like the drawing on this cover because it looks like a painting and it is nice and colorful. The title is also in a creative writing and I think that it looks good. Just by looking at the novel I predict that this novel will be about bees and what they think and how they act. I think this because of the bee on the cover and the title of The Secret Life of Bees. It might be about how they find food like jam and how they create homes.

  69. I like the second cover better because it looks more serious. Even though the first cover has lots of pictures, I think the second one explains the story more. It has a bee and a honey jar on it, which are big parts in the story. Also, the second cover is more serious. The colors make the cover look serious and interesting at the same time.
The honey jar shows that the story will be based around honey and bees. Also, by the seriousness of the colors and pictures, it shows that the story is going to be serious.

  70. This novel, The Secret Life of Bees, looks very interesting and fun. The cover that proved to me that it would be interesting and fun would have to be the first cover. The reason I am favoring the first cover rather than the second cover is because it caught my eye. I couldn’t help but to just look at all the detailed pictures on the first cover. The cover was a radiant green, and it had great pictures to look at. It had bright colors, it was vivid, and it had several pictures that may be able to help the reader predict what will happen in the novel. Not only that, but it also had the title written in a large font. It popped out at me and my eyes were drawn to it. In addition, there were a few reviews by some critics, like one that said “The Phenomenal Number 1 Bestseller”, which showed me that this was truly going to be a fun book to read. However, when I looked it at the second one, it grabbed my attention also, but not as much as the first cover. In the second cover, it did use some bright colors, but it didn’t really show me anything besides a jar of honey on a window sill. That doesn’t tell me anything about what’s going to happen in the book. On the other hand, the first cover gave me a lot more background information about the book just by looking at the pictures.
From these pictures on the first cover, I was capable of predicting a few things about this book. I was able to predict that the girl in the middle of the cover may be telling a story about her past. I can foresee this because at the top left corner of the cover, there is a black and white picture of a woman standing by a car. That could be someone really important to the little girl, like maybe her mom. Another thing is the necklace just below the old photo of the woman. This necklace tells me that maybe the girl is telling a story of her mother who may have passed away, but before, gave the girl her necklace to keep. Also, it shows me that this book takes place in the past and in the earlier days. These are some things that I was able to predict by looking at the cover of this novel, The Secret Life of Bees.

  71. Personally I prefer the second cover. I think that it looks more symbolic to the story rather than a girl with pigtails. I like this cover because it is fancy and incorporates the title into the illustration. The bees and honey is very simple but it looks like it can tell a lot about the story. The top cover is very busy and has too much going on and the story looks more of a little girl’s book. When I see the top cover of I girl with pigtails I think that this might not be the best book for me. When I look at the bottom cover I can predict what might go on in this book. As of now I think that the story is a bout a lonely girl who talks to bees or maybe there might be a lot of stinging going on in this story, you never know. Cover wise I think the second one is a better choice that may sell a lot more copies. They say you shouldn’t judge a book by the cover, but everyone does it anyway.

  72. I personally like the second book cover. It is more fun and exciting and tells more about what the book is about which is more on the sad side then the happy side. A sad novel has more of a blended, more blurred feeling to it which is exactly what cover number two expresses. The first cover is the feeling of a happy book, nice and bright and definite and from what I have heard, that is not the plot of the story. The image of the second cover could represent a girl who wants to find herself and open up the world but is trapped in her own worries, which would be the jar. The first cover to me means a girl who has found herself and is venturing out into the world, hence the open space and interesting places.

  73. Personally, I like the second cover better. I like how the central theme on the cover are the bees and the jar and the paint brush, and how it doesn't show the girl and all of the extra things on the first cover that give too much away. It's simple yet pretty, and I like how it looks all smudgy and brightly colored.
It makes me want to read the book because the cover doesn't give much away about it, unlike the first cover. It's mysteriously intriguing, or intriguingly mysteroius.
If I could predict anything about this book based off its cover, I would say that it's about bees, and art and maybe the person on the jar.

  74. The Secret Life of Bees looks like an excellent book and I can’t wait to read it. These covers look very nice to me but honestly I like one of them more. I like the second cover more for many reasons. First of all, I like the second one because it looks like a higher level book. The first one reminds me of reading a Clifford the Big Red Dog book because the pictures in that book are very children like and I am in the eighth grade. I believe that since I am in the eighth grade that I should be looking at higher level pictures as well as content. All the pictures probably explain the book really well but that doesn’t cut it. I like the abstract look to the second book cover. The colors of the second cover remind me more of the outside where bees live. Even though the first cover has a nice sense of yellow, green, and orange, I believe that the colors blend and match more on the second cover. I would prefer the second much more than the first one. Secondly, I love the font on the second cover. Just look at it, it makes me want to melt like butter on a warm sunny day. The first one’s font looks abrupt and bees fly very smoothly. They don’t stop and go and stop and go. They just glide in the wind like a bird soaring through the sky. I like how the title of the book is in a cloud like thing. It reminds me of a bee’s body and how a bumble bee is big and fluffy. I like how the picture is centered around the honey, which is what a bee actually eats and wants. In the first cover there are just pictures and nothing really explaining anything besides a girl.
I cannot stress enough on which one I enjoy and prefer more. I love the second one because of the abstract art and the font. There are stories in which both books are possessing. The first cover does a great job adding in a girl. This tells me that the girl is the main character. I see a house, which is probably her house. Also, I see an article, I believe. I cannot really make out some of the pictures, though. I also see an old car, which tells me that this is an olden day book. I believe it might have something to do with slavery, but I’m not positive. In the second cover I see a jar of honey and a bee. This really doesn’t tell me much. This actually tells me very little considering the title is talking about bees. I understand that there is going to be something about bees so the artist really didn’t need to draw a honey jar. I am thinking that the jar might be symbolic but I haven’t read the story so I don’t know at all. There are many assumptions in which I could make but I am very interested to find out what the pictures have to do with the book. I really like the second cover because it looks attractive and I would totally buy that one over the second cover.

  75. If I had to choose between the first cover and the second cover I would definitely choose the second cover. The main reason I like the second cover is because it is different. The art ism much more abstract and I have always been a fan of abstract art. I feel the first cover is very similar to many covers I have seen on books all over the shelves. Looking at the first cover you would be able to tell, okay there is a girl in the story and oh there is a car. Looking at the second cover really gets you thinking about what the story may be about and what the possible symbols on the cover represent.I have never seen or heard anything about this book and disappointingly the covers don’t give much away. However if I had to predict what the book is about I would say the book is about a girl who like a bee is alone and small in the world with a tough life. I imagine she probably has to fight to survive and has dealt with some pain like many characters who we’ve read about this year.

  76. While both of the covers probably represent the book, The Secret Life of Bees, I feel that the second cover shows the most. The first cover is a bunch of pictures of small objects randomly scattered around the edge, with a girl looking up at them. It looks really amateurish. The second cover, however, is a water color painting with the focus directed towards a jar of honey. The pictures remind me of summer and happiness, while the first book’s images remind me of children’s books that I have written, and poorly illustrated. The shape surrounding the title makes me think of various shapes in nature, such as clouds, which calms me.

Using the image on the second book cover, I can predict that the main character will be peaceful. The watercolors, with all the blending, shows that the main character will not be out of control, and will move slowly through life, by taking one emotion at a time. What appears to be streaks on a window, that block out the scenery behind it will show that the storyline is unpredictable, and no one will see twists coming. Since the honey jar looks almost like a thing of paint, the main character will be artistic. By the end, something sad will happen, as most bees that are lured by honey in a jar are eventually poisoned. The second cove reveals more about The Secret Life of Bees.

  77. I prefer the Second picture because it show more originality to the whole idea of a book. the first one looks a little bit overrated and looks like it has too much going on. the prediction is think is that the girls best friend is a bee, because everyone is afraid to talk to her, or she doesn't have the friends like everyone else and it is very hard for her.

    ReplyDelete
  78. The cover that I like is the bottom cover. The bottom cover tells you more about the book then the other. The cover’s illustration is a painting not like a collage the other cover has. The bottom cover can make you paint 1000 pictures in your head. The top cover you can’t understand what’s going on, but the bottom tells you something about the book. The bottom cover is an illustration that has a jar of honey. This means the book has something to do with bees and making honey. Also you can tell that the book takes place in the past by the old fashion theme to the cover.

  79. The first cover was the one that caught my attention when I was scrolling down the page. What persuaded me were the colors. The colors were eye popping colors which really caught my attention. The images were good. I liked the first cover because it looks much simpler that the second one. The one with the jar of honey doesn’t seem like an appropriate cover for the novel.I think it is about a girl who had a fight with someone and she runs away. I think that she sees how bees are when they are alone and not working for the queen bee.

  80. Searching for identity and resilience has to do with the book, Heroes, because it describes how Francis’ life was. After jumping on a grenade, trying to kill him, he looses his face. From that point on, he tries to find himself again. He relies on his once idle who he looked up to him. Larry gave him a reason to live by getting him together with Nicole but then his idle Larry LaSalle, betrayed him. That is how those themes were found in the book, Heroes.

  81. Out of these two covers, I prefer the second one because of the background and also the font. The background has very nice colors and uses what seems like pastels. It seems much more peaceful and appealing. The first background seems much more chaotic and the font takes up a large amount of the cover. The font on the second one also seems more suited for the background and does not get blocked by the background at all especially since it’s in a circle. The font on the first one isn’t bad either but I feel it’s a bit too large. This may sound wrong, but I tend to just books by their cover a lot of the time and if I saw this book with the first cover, I wouldn’t be as looking forward to reading it as much as the second one. Looking at the cover, I can’t seem to predict much but I feel like the main characters will be living in an environment where it’s always warm and in the summer, bees come out and swarm all over.

  82. The Secret Life of Bees is a book I am looking forward to reading. I would rather read the second book, with the more colorful cover. Books that have a extremely colorful cover always catches my eye. The colors on the cover are all so pretty, and the image makes me wonder what that has to do with the story. From the covers I would think that the story is about bees, and the lives they live. I am extremely excited to read this book.

  83. The book The Secret Life of Bees should have the bottom cover. I like this cover because it shows the illustration of the honey in the jar and bee buzzing around. I have seen the movie of this book before and the honey means a lot to the characters. This cover also has a nice painting on the cover. It makes you feel like you are almost their looking at the jar in real life. In this cover you can see the bright colors that attract you eyes to look in that direction. This cover makes me think of the warm summers and the great times that happen.

  84. The cover I prefer is the second one because it looks more like a middle school book, something that I would most likely read. The first cover looks more like a children’s book because of all the random pictures on it. The second cover looks more like a painting which gives the story more interesting aspects.
I predict that this story will mostly be about women, or women’s rights. I think that their might be something about bees too, since the book is called The Secret life of Bees. The setting may be on a farm too.

  86. Relationships with parents and search for identity have to do with of mice and men and with heroes. In heroes Francis had no real identity now that he was missing his face. Everybody was searching for his true identity. Now with of mice and men, george and lenny really had no parents. That is why this has to do with that
